sleep. need sleep.

So after coming back from my trip (only 1-hour time difference) and then staying up until 5 on Saturday night (and drinking too much beer) has totally screwed me up.  I woke up after about 3-4 hours of crappy sleep yesterday morning, I wasn't able to nap yesterday at all and I went to bed at the normal time last night, only to wake up 3 hours later for good.  I tried having some herbal tea, eating a banana muffin (I was starving), watching TV, laying in bed with eyes closed willing myself to sleep, laying in bed forcing my eyes open to try to make myself more tired.  Nothing worked.  I'm sure eventually I'll just get exhausted and it'll work itself out but I've had sleep issues off and on for a couple of weeks now when normally I sleep a nice 7+ hours straight.

What are your 'going back to sleep' tricks?

Re: sleep. need sleep.

  • I have frequent bouts of insomnia, so I'm probably the wrong person to ask, but...

Lay off the caffeine for half a day, maybe a full day. Lay off alcohol in the evenings, too. TV / computer usage is also supposed to be bad for sleep. I've read somewhere that you should step away from them at least 2 hours before trying to go to sleep.

I usually resort to Simply Sleep (cannot, will not take Ambien) after a couple of days of insomnia.

Reading this as I'm chugging caffeine and contemplating buying a bottle of wine for tonight to help me get sleepy.  And of course my iphone was wired to my hand last night while I was watching TV.  Would figure I'm doing everything wrong!

  • If I can't sleep, I usually crank down the air conditioning.  I sleep really well when I'm all snuggled in blankets.

I tend to be a worrier, so if I can't sleep, it's because something is on my mind.  I write down everything that is bothering me along with ideas for solutions next to them.  It helps me get it out of my head and onto a piece of paper and closer to resolution.

I have been desperate enough to try melatonin once, but while I slept like a rock for 12 hours, I woke up with a sore neck because I didn't move all night.

If all that fails, I have a 150 page software manual that I'm supposed to read for work.  I usually get a few pages in then I start drifting....  Big Smile

  • I turn the radio on tuned to NPR, and have the volume kind of low, and set it to turn off in 30 min. That usually does the trick for me.

  • benadryl is my BFF. it's the same ingredient in most OTC meds so I just buy the generic version.

my bedtime routine is reading a magazine, I usually get through about half of an article before my eyes start closing.  can't read a book, that will usually wake me up if anything.

I hope you get some good sleep soon!  insomnia definitely sucks. ;(

  • Update: I got (almost) 6 hours solid last night!  Woke up again at 2:30am on the dot but was able to get back to sleep.  I did have 3 glasses of wine prior to bed, but I credit my DH getting back from his guys trip.  I just don't think I sleep as well without him. :)

  • Spoke too soon.  Fell asleep on the couch right after dinner then moved to bed around 10:30.  Didn't fall asleep until after 1am.  Woke up at 2:30 again on the dot.

    Sigh.

  • DH does the same thing- If he wakes up at work for calls at 1, 3 and 5 in the morning, he will do the same thing the next night at home.  Melatonin will put him to sleep, but not keep him there.  He's still working on the solution...

I hope you get some sleep soon!
