Food for new parents

Good friends of ours just had a baby.  I want to provide them with a meal.  I'm debating between taking a meal to their house sometime within the next couple of weeks, or giving them a gift card to Making Thyme so that they can pick up a meal at their convenience.

Which do you think new parents would prefer?

  • Blast!  You guys agree with my husband.  I hate when he's right.  Stick out tongue

He thought it would be best to take them actual food.

I thought it would be best to get them a gift card to pick up food.  That way, they can pick out their own food and get it at their convenience (I was thinking the H could pick it up on his way home from work some day.)  I thought they might prefer the flexibility of this option.

  • My friend set up a time with us to come see the baby and bring us dinner. She brought everything for tacos (meat already made, shredded lettuce, shells, shredded cheese, a small thing of sour cream, a small taco sauce, cut up tomatoes, etc.). It was really nice b/c there were plenty of leftovers and I could throw it together in 30 seconds.

We also got a frozen spinach and pasta meal from a different friend. That was nice later on when I could handle thinking far enough ahead to turn on the oven (it had to bake for 40 mins) and get out the garlic bread.

  • Just a heads up - skip anything that requires defrosting. Dinner is sometimes the furthest thing from a new parent's mind but when it's time to eat you don't want to be disappointed that you should have thawed that meal before hand. I say make a nice meal that can either have that night or can put in the fridge to have in a day or two.

  • We had a couple bring us enchiladas and another brought lasagna.  Both were nice because they could be put in the fridge for a few days until we were ready to throw them in the oven.  They also both freeze nice, so if for some reason we weren't going to be eating them right away I could stow them in the freezer.

**Side note, we ate them both the days they came**
