Restaurant Etiquette - sending food back

I was having a discussion with DH about this recently, and I was curious how others felt about it.  When you are eating out at a restaurant, under what circumstances do you feel it's OK to send food back?

I am a picky eater, but I never send food back unless there is something really wrong with it (hair in food, it's cold, wrong order, etc.)  There have been a lot of times where I didn't like what I ordered, but I haven't sent it back because it's not the cook's fault that I'm picky!  DH says if I don't like it to send it back, b/c I'm paying to enjoy a meal and should like what I order.  What do you think, is it OK to send food back just because you don't like it (when the food has been made properly)?

  • I don't think its cool to send something back because you didn't like it.  If you weren't careful enough reading the description, its your fault.

Same goes for wine - you don't send it back because you don't like it.  You send it back if something is wrong with it.

I waitressed for years during college- so I never send food back. I'm scared of what they'll do to it! That said, I'm not a picky eater so it doesn't usually come up.

  • wow I have no idea how or why that happened......

what I meant was....if the food is wrong, or something is seriously wrong with it!  YIKES!

  • I have only ever sent food back if it was really cold or under/overcooked.  I like my steak medium rare and I'm not about to eat it well done!

I have worked at a restaurant also but we never did anything to the food when it got sent back...  I guess I shouldn't assume that everywhere, though, lol!

  • I am a very picky eater but I wouldn't send something back just b/c I didn't like it.  I can only think of one instance where I sent something back.  My steak was way too rare and I couldn't even eat it.  They warmed it up and it was great.  I understand enjoying what you pay for, but it's my fault if I don't like it and I hate to be a bother anyway.

  • As a waitress, it bugs me when people do it. That said, I have done it a few times. The times I did it had more to do food temp--medium rare, etc. I never mess with people's food when they send it back, but we do joke about spitting in it!

  • I worked  as a waitress for years and while I worked I never saw anyone do anything to food even if it was sent back.

I would not send a meal back because I just don't like it....I'll DH's instead hahaha. If the food is cooked improperly, dirty plate, hair etc...I'll send it back.

I have asked for new water glasses...I always seems to get the one that has a lipstick stain on it. I've also had to send back several desserts even after stating no nuts due to a nut allergy. No one has ever been mean about it.

  • I agree with everyone else.  Sending it back because it was not cooked correctly or there was something wrong with it is acceptable.  I am a picky eater but most of the time, I can eat around whatever it is I don't like and DH can eat the rest.

  • I agree with you.. if there is something wrong.. send it back..  but if you just don't like what you ordered.. you gotta just suck it up..
If you bought some food at the grocery store and cooked something with it and didn't like what you made, you wouldn't be able to return it to the grocery store.. so why should you be able to return it to a restaurant?

  • I agree -- I only send things back when they are wrong (undercooked, missed something in my order...)  If there is hair in my food, I'm not sure I want the "new" version if it's coming from a nasty kitchen!  LOL!  If I don't like something, I usually deal with it as best I can, since usually that is my fault not their's.

  • I rarely send food back, unless there is something specifically wrong with it: undercooked/overcooked, or once I ordered fajitas from chilis and the plate was sizzling, but the meat was ice cold!

The last time I tried to send something back was because I thought there was a dead fly in my food... the waitress came back and said it was a spud from a potato (but seriously, everyone at my table agreed it looked like a dead fly)... by then I had already lost my appetite.

  • i agree with pp's. I have only ever sent something back if it wasn't cooked properly, hair or like i once had a piece of plastic in my meal.

I too worked as a waitress for years, so even though we never did anything to items sent back, you never know in other places.

  • The only time that I have ever sent anything back is if it is inedible (way too cold, burnt).  Other than that I make do.  I would never send something back because I did not like it...that is my fault.
