best neighborhood to live in in Manhattan???

we might be heading over to Manhattan in September for anywhere from 3-10 months for my husband's work.  we likely get to choose where we want to live, so we want to pick something family-friendly.  We have two DDs who will be 3.5 and 1.5 in September.  I need to be somewhere that is in walking distance of shops, parks, activities, etc, and hopefully in an area with other young families.  I am terrified about making the short-term move and surviving on my own with 2 little ones (dh works long hours).

Thanks for all of the help!!!

Re: best neighborhood to live in in Manhattan???

  • if you must live in manhattan, i'd say you should stay near central park east...maybe in the 70s or 80s.

what i think would be an even better bet is park slope, an absolutely LOVELY neighborhood in brooklyn with tons of kids, tons of parks, tons of pretty much everything a young family could ever need or want within walking distance.  oh, and it's unbelieveably safe.  and did i mention beautiful?

  • I would recommend looking on the UWS - up around 96th Street. There are tons of families and you have two parks to enjoy. There is also everything you could need within a couple blocks radius, plus you have great trains right there that can get you to Midtown or Downtown in just a short ride. It's a beautiful area of Manhattan - it has a residential feel with all the Manhattan perks.

  • for manhattand i'd recommend the UWS (upper west side).

i live in cobble hill, brooklyn - i think you'd like it there too :)

  • As others have mentioned, UWS would be a great option.  Also, the upper east side (UES).  Both would give you easy access to Central Park (depending how far east or west you live and how much you like to walk, you would be able to walk to the park).
  • There are so many families in Manhattan nowadays that you can't really go wrong.  For example, my neighborhood is Murray Hill, and even though its reputation is that is for young recent college grads, it is teaming with families.
