Wondering what everyone does for childcare.

We're taking the summer to stock up a prepregnancy savings. On the bump, a reply said daycare for an infant is $60 a day. I know the ratio is much lower for infants, so the rate will go down. A babysitter is about $15 an hour and I'd have to find someone to trust with the baby and in the house. So I'm looking more to daycare, I guess even if it's from credited person doing it in their home. There doesn't seem to be many daycares in Queens from Bayside, Flushing that'll take infants. Right now I pick up extra $ at school by doing summer school and after school activities. I was hoping not to do that once we have kids, so I can spend more time with them at home. However, if the cost of daycare necesitates...

So, I'm wondering what you all do for childcare, how much and if you have heard of any good places.

Thanks for the info.

Re: Wondering what everyone does for childcare.

  • I can't be of much help with Queens daycares, since we live in Brooklyn. But I've really had no problems finding daycares by us. I've stayed home with Sasha since she was born and we're just now looking for a dc for her starting in September. We were quoted anywhere from $600 to $700 a month. We're opting for twice a week, so that would be $35 a day, just to give you an idea.

And to be honest, we just picked up a newspaper with ads and called daycares. We went to see one a couple of weeks ago which we really liked. The thing is that we don't really know any parents in our neighborhood, so we couldn't really ask for references, so we basically have to go with our gut instinct on this one.

    Good luck!

  • We are doing a carcare here in Brooklyn and I think we are paying 8.50 an hour.
  • We don't have children yet but when we do we plan on using a daycare. I have already researched the prices (I know, very presumptious!) in my nabe and so far can find places from $500 to $700 for a month. I guess if I really do become pregnant, I can look more closely and choose one near my home.

There are daycare options in queens that take infants. I think a popular one is Jamaica Kids. (http://imagineelc.com/)  We're using a nanny because we weren't in the "know" about the centers around and didn't find out about this until after we hired someone and are very happy with a nanny for now.

I think centers in queens run about $1000 per month for an infant, give or take. In Manhattan centers seem to run 2K per month and honestly you can get a nanny for that kind of money.
