Does anyone have any experience with this form of birthcontrol? If so how did it work out for you? Any major side effects or problems with it?
I am looking into birthcontrol options for after the baby comes and I've narrowed it down to this or paragard and I'm looking for personal experiences.
TIA!
Re: Implanon
I got the implanon put in at the end of January and love it. I loved it so much, my younger sister had it put in about a month ago.
I have not had a period yet. The only thing, that I was unsure about is not knowing when I will get my period, but so far, so good.
I have not experienced any side effects. No weight gain, acne, etc.
PM me if you have any other questions.
Sorry so long...
I got this in the begining of the month. The insertion was a piece of cake- like 5 minutes and no pain except for a pinch from the lidocaine shot. I bruised pretty bad afterwards- note to self... there is a reason why the doctor said to baby the arm or you'll bruise worse. It was a little sore for a couple of days but now it is great. I went from the depo shot to this. I wanted to stay away from estrogen because of cancer risks in my family but the doc said the pills aren't too reliable and this would be better. You can get pregnant RIGHT after getting this out- some have gotten pg DAYS after. This is great because it can take up to a year to get AF back after depo. I like Implanon because it is a lower dose of hormones- sex drive has increased and I am shedding lbs that I gained on the depo. I have noticed a little moodiness probably from adjusting to the new balance of hormones. Don't know when AF will return but I hope it is soon so dh and I can hopefully have a LO soon! Implanon (my dr said) is not a great controller of bleeding- it won't get rid of AF like depo but in my readings people have a range of bleeding from none, to light, to regular. I also haven't heard of a lot of side effects from it either- just the usual bc se: weight gain, sex drive decrease, acne, moodiness, etc.
I've had my implanon since the beginning of April.
Overall, I really like it. I can't take BC with estrogen in it for health reasons, and they didn't want to give me an IUD because I wasn't sexually active at the time, so I wasn't left with many options, and implanon seemed like the best choice. My only issue is that I have been on my period since mid-April. That's right, every day. Now, this is a side effect I knew about, and DH and I both decided we would deal with it if it happened, and I just happen to be one of those people that it happened to. It is supposed to go away eventually, but not everyone is willing to deal with AF for three months straight like I have. [Especially since now I've learned that I'm allergic to latex condoms]. That is the only side effect I've had, and I have a few friends who have one also, and none of them have had any side effects at all, including mine.
So, I'd say that if you're willing to risk bleeding irregularity [which apparently is less common in women who have had children], I'd definitely recommend it.
I was on You-Tube and came across a video on the inserting and removal of it and that was enough for me.
I had a friend who had it and it became attached to the muscle in her arm and she had surgery to get it removed. I've heard that happens a lot.

My dr as well as the implanon website state that less than 2% of people have complications like this. Also, if you go to someone who has a lot of experience with this form of bc, like an ob/gyn vs a family practioner, I don't think you'll have problems getting it out.
I had it for almost 2 years. I had it removed due to decreased sex drive, weight gain and erratic bleeding and spotting. I am an OB nurse and just before I had it taken out I took care of 3 patients in a few weeks that had gotten pregnant while using it. The failure rate is not that high, but it was enough to scare me. Insertion was not terrible. Swelling and bruising. Removal was the same and I have a scar that is now fading.
When I had it removed I had a paragard inserted. The insertion was a little rough as I have not had any children, but now a distant memory. I love not having the horemones in my body. My sex drive is finally back to normal:) I do not care for the heavier flow but it seems to be getting better each month and I am no longer having cramps.
Good luck with your decision and congrats on the baby!
It is. Norplant has been off the market for like 10 years. Norplant was 5 sticks in a fan shape inserted into your arm. Implanon is one stick roughly 2 inches long.
