Acne?

So...now that I'm 25 my face apparently thinks I'm 15.  What acne medicine/cream/etc do you use?  I'm planning on going to the  dermatologist once our new insurance kicks in...for that and a couple other things, but any thing you swear by until then?

Re: Acne?

  • Ugh.  No suggestions but just wanted to commiserate.  Ever since I stopped BCPs my face (and shoulders... ick) have been very reminiscent of high school.

I just bought the Neutrogena Wave Sonic Power cleanser.  I haven't used it yet, but I'll let you know if it helps.  Good luck!

  • I have been fortunate to never have horrible acne, but when I came off BC I noticed a HUGE change.  Then I started using Mary Kay's Timewise line of products (face cleanser, day/night solution, and moisturizer) and it has kept my skin super clear.  I'd highly recommend it!  And I know of a great Mary Kay lady in Raleigh if you want to try it before you buy, since it is a bit pricey for the initial investment.
  • Until just a few years ago (I'm 30), I've always had mild to moderate acne. A round of low-dose antibiotics for a few months is what really helped knock it out for me, so I'm behind you on going to see a dermatologist whenever you can.

In the meantime, here's things I've found that help me:

Touch your face as little as possible.

If you absolutely have to pop a zit try doing it right before you wash your face to give the bacteria as little time as possible to sit around in/on your skin.

Change your pillow case at least once a week if not more often (remember, we spend 6-8 hours a day with that cloth touching & rubbing our faces).

I've been using Neutrogena or Noxema face washes with 2% salicylic acid (& some sort of microbeads) in the morning , & something with at least 5-10% benzoyle peroxide in it (Neutrogena or Clean & Clear) at night in the shower. HTH

(can order online, or I've seen it at Earth Fare, or Lowe's Foods) Thoroughly Clean original face wash and daily essential moisturizer have helped me tremendously.  I've struggled with acne off and on (basically when I have not been on BC) and this has turned my skin around, acne-wise.  I still get small pimples occasionally, but nothing like the huge ones that hurt!
