poll: where you buy booze
So, I went to pick up some champagne tonight (DH is going to be home late because he has a meeting, so I'm relaxing with dinner, champagne and trashy reality TV!), and it got me thinking.
Where I went was the package store. aka liquor store. I've always heard that most people out of CT think its strange that it is called a package store to us, and my MOH actually got into a heated debate with someone in college in maine.
In addition, have you ever heard of it called a package store?

Re: poll: where you buy booze
Well, in MD we always called it the liquor store, but they also sold beer, etc. in the convenience stores (gas stations, etc.). When I moved to PA I thought it was strange because liquor was sold at a liquor store, but beer was sold at a beer distributorship (you had to buy a 30 pack!) Now that I live in GA they call them package stores. H and I rarely go to the package store though because they sell beer and wine in our grocery store. lol.
What a convoluted answer.
so we're not crazy here in CT!
ps...I'm finally not a newb anymore!!!
Have called them this my whole life! I grew up in MA so when I moved to CT I was shocked that they sold beer in grocery stores. I'd never heard of such a thing!
my blog
I've never heard the phrase "Package Store." Where I was from we just called it by the store name in my family.
When we moved to FL I was shocked to see them selling wine in Target and the supermarkets!

I'm from Ontario, where liquor is controlled by the province so regular stores can't sell it. When I lived there we always called the store where you buy liquor the "LCBO" (Liquor Control Board of Ontario), because that is the actual name of it. In Quebec, we could at least buy beer and wine at the convenience store (or "the dep", for "depanneur"), but the store that sells liquor is called the "SAQ" (Societe des Alcools du Quebec).
In Chicago I guess I would call it a liquor store, but I always just buy booze at the grocery store. I'd never heard the term "package store" before.

i've never heard the term package store. interesting.
i'm in PA, where the commonwealth refuses to allow private sales of alcohol. i either refer to it as the liquor store or the state store. and as mentioned in a pp, liquor/wine/champagne is sold in a liquor store and beer is sold at a beer distributor. it's annoying. if you want a 6 pack or a 12 pack you have to head for a bar or an eatery that sells beer. there are two eateries in walking distance to us that sells beer bottles individually so that you can have a mixed 6 pack which we love.
HOWEVER! the commonwealth is very slowly coming out of the stone age. our newest market district grocery store was given permission to sell beer which is super amazing and super weird to see all at the same time. haha.
we call it the bottle shop....
Raeyn: are you canadian, or just lived there?
jrsygrl: im confused what the commonwealth has to do with it? when i here commonwealth i think the Queen...
In WY we called it a liquor store, and it was a one stop shop for all alcoholic needs, so to speak. It was always weird to go to CO and see beer and wine available in grocery stores. I learned to love that, however, living in TX.
Now I live on a military base, so we buy it at the Class Six, which is essentially military for liquor store, and its the only place on base to buy it.
interesting how different it is from place to place!
In CT, you cant buy anything in convenience stores..I remember when we were in NY once, it was the strangest thing to us to see someone checking out a six pack.
We also cant buy alcohol of any kind on sundays. that totally sucks, especially on holiday weekends when you realize you dont have enough!
no, has nothing to do with the queen..haha. some states are still commonwealths. *quick googles to see who else*
Kentucky
Massachusetts
Pennsylvania
Virginia
those states are run a little bit differently and have different rules in very random/rare cases. liquor purchase is one of them. something like that.
we can buy liquor/beer on sundays now..as of a handful of years ago. but they are only open 12-5. at least it's something!!
We don't have liquor stores or package stores (I have actually never heard that term)... In South Louisiana you can buy any type of booze (beer, wine, liquor, etc) at any grocery store, gas stations, or convenience store. When I went to school in North Louisiana I was shocked the first time I went to walmart and there was not a liquor isle- just beer. The town where I went to school only sold liquor at restaurants (therefore any bar had to be a restaurant to sell liquor). the next town over could sell liquor so when you hit the line there were about 5 liquor stores and a couple of daiquiri shops.
Here is another question for yall... Do you have Daiquiri shops where you live- if so are they drive through daiquiri shops?
I am Canadian, but my husband is American. I just got my green card last month, so now I finally don't have to worry about immigration (at least for the next 2 years, at which point I have to reapply to prove I'm still married).
I've never even heard of a Daiquiri shop.

what is a daiquiri shop?? and they have drive thrus?
I did see a drive through package store (liquor store) in New Jersey once haha.
Never heard of a daiquiri shop, but I imagine that it would be for adults like ice cream shops for kids
Where I went to college in PA there was a 'brew thru' which was a drive-thru beer distributor.
And on that note - why do they think it is smart to sell you alcohol at a drive thru? In most states don't you have to keep it in the trunk anyway? or is that just MD?
As long as it isn't open, you can have it anywhere in the car here...although I've heard a rumor (from someone who was friends with a cop) that you can even have open containers as long as there's more than just the driver. but i dont like to take my chances haha. although, now that i think about it, it hasn't stopped me. **please note...while i'm a passenger!**
i love our local drive thru beer distributor! i don't have to get out of the car and lug heavy cases. instead the nice man brings it to me and throws it in my trunk or on to my passenger seat! woohoo!!
but now i want a drive through daquari place. whatever it is, it must be glorious!
We get our booze from the grocery store. Chicagoians also tend to call the grocery store by it's proper name, like Jewel or Dominick's. I rarely hear people say they're going to the grocery store.
I can't believe that some of you live in places where booze is hard to get - that sucks!

Melk, I know in CT passengers can have open containers. MY girlfriend goes to all the country music concerts and they booze it up sitting in traffic on the way.
In MA, you can buy beer on Sundays. Most packies have beer, wine and liquor all in one shop, and there are some smaller convenience stores that sell beer, wine and liquor. I know that grocery stores, if they're a chain, can have up to 3 locations licensed to carry beer and wine. I worked at Trader Joe's in college and was always explaining to customers that only certain locations carried the 3-buck Chuck, and we weren't one of them.
my blog
Daiquiri Shops are basically bars with lots of frozen drink machines... usually 10-15 different machines with different yummy frozen alocoholic beverages.

In Louisiana any type of open container in the car is illegal, if the passenger has an open container the driver will get a ticket. The daquiri shops use to put a piece of tape over where the sraw goes in to make it "closed" but mow most of them just don't put the straw in and I guess that is good enough... haha
This is what I imagine heaven to be like.
