A doggie diagnosis

Finally!!  We went to the vet today because Chloe was obviously in pain, whether it was from her glands or her leg.  So we're there and I'm explaining everything that happens with her leg when she runs and when she fell getting out of the tub on Saturday.  Everytime we've mentioned to the vet about her leg, they brush it off, saying that she just needs to lose some weight.  Regardless, if there's nothing wrong, why does it keep happening?

Well she was doing the exam, bending Chloe's left leg and feeling the knee, when apparently her knee cap popped out of place!  Patellar Luxation!  She said it fits perfectly with the symptoms that I described.  She recommended glucosamine and some pain meds.  Eventually, she'll need surgery, but for right now, she just needs the meds.  Also the pain meds will help the discomfort from the glands.  I'm just so relieved we have a diagnosis AND the pain meds....I was tired of seeing her hurting. :(

  • Awwwww, poor pup!!!!  At least you know what's wrong with her and got her some meds to make her feel better!!!!

  • My dad's dachshund (also named Chloe!) has it too. Hers is very mild, though, and generally does not cause her any pain.

I also have a friend who has a boston terrier that had severe patellar luxation. She had the surgery and is 100% better now! The recovery sucked though.. the dog just wanted to gogogo and my friend had a hard time keeping her low-key!
  • Aawww poor thing!

  • Hah I know how tough it is to try and keep a crazy dog quiet after surgery. Dakota did not want to slow down after she got fixed! I asked the vet if they give you drugs for them afterwords and she was like "no.... are you worried?" Well I'm asking aren't I!?!? So I explained how energetic and crazy she is and the girl was like "well... just do your best" so of course the next day Dakota is running around jumping off furniture like a crazy dog!! Luckily she didn't pull a stitch or anything.

  • Glad your baby is gonna be ok! Hugs I am sure you feel a lot better knowing what is going on with her and that you could help make her feel better!
  • So glad you know what's happening now.  Poor Chloe - the doctor didn't take her seriously.  Now you have some peace of mind and you may have a dazed & confused pup once she gets some of those meds in her...could be interesting to watch.

This was Stella exactly!  People also told us that she would calm down a bit after she had her surgery, but she didn't At. All.

I'm glad you know what's wrong with your pup, and hope she'll be feeling better soon!  Will the surgery be expensive when she does need it?

We were told the same thing. She was a little groggy the day we took her home, but after that, NADA! I know she was in pain, when she'd jump off the couch she'd yelp when she landed... but it didn't stop her!

  • I will keep her in my thoughts!  I hope she feels better soon!
  • Thanks everyone!  She seems to be doing okay.  I'm at work tonight, so Adam's keeping an eye on her.  The meds they gave her are similar to Advil, so likely no craziness.  The thing I wonder about is how she would do after that kind of surgery....is her leg wrapped up?  Can she squat to pee and poop?  Oh, the random things I think of.

Yeah, after Chloe got spayed, the doctor was like, don't let her jump on things.  What did she do when we got to the car?  Jumped in the car!  Luckily she didn't hurt herself.  I swear, that dog's going to worry me to death!

  • Poor baby!  I hope the meds help.

  • My brothers mini pin had to have the surgery for it and they just wrap the leg from about the hip to just above the ankle.  The thing that made Roxie had to have the surgery was that she kept jumping off the couch onto the hardwood floor and re-hurting her knee.
