Re: Where is everyone?

  • Home today. I have my micro lab final tomorrow so I'm trying to get motivated to study but currently I'm watching HGTV.

  • I'm here on and off. Did you pick out your new tv yet, mamie?

  • Here on and off but sorting through hundreds of rows of financial data to consolidate some spreadsheets at work... trying to stay awake.
  • I'll sorta be around today, but usually by the time I get to log in you all are headed home...stupid West Coast time...

  • ooooh nice!! I'm sure a 47" would be awesome. We have a 40" and I think that seems huge...

  • Nice Mamie - I'm sure you are excited!  Sounds like a good one.  I know DH was adamant when we bought ours that it be 1080p not 1080i and it had to be LCD because of the amount of light in the room or something.

Megs - meant to tell you yesterday - I really like your new haircut.  The bangs are really cute!

  • For me, the bigger the better. :)  And we're going to be replacing a 27" tube TV, so I hope I'm blown away!!  It's between this Vizio and an LG that only has 60 Hz but it gets amazing reviews. :(

  • We chose to get a nice 60 Hz instead of going with the 120 Hz. Unless you're going to be watching a lot of live sports, which we really don't, it wasn't worth it to us. Regular DVD movies and  tv can look sort of weird (almost like they were filmed on a home camera or something) on a 120 Hz TV due to the different refresh rate.

  • Does the Hz make that big of a difference?  Ours is 240 Hz and I don't think anything looks funny.  I couldn't even tell the difference at the store between the 120 and the 240.  We bought the 240 because it was the same price as the 120 because someone had brought it back the day before because it didnt fit in their LR so it was an open box special.  Somehow that saved us almost $1000.
  • Some people say anything below 120 is junk, but the 60 Hz LG gets awesome reviews and people say they can't tell a difference. I'm sure DH would watch some sports on the TV, but really, coming from a 27" tube, anything's going to appear magical.

  • My techie DH says the difference between 120 and 240 isn't that big, it's the jump from 60 to 120 that is more the issue. I can absolutely tell the difference between my grandfather's 240 Hz Sony and my 60 Hz Samsung though and I don't care for it. It smooths out the image to the point that I can see the movie backdrops much more clearly than I want to and it makes the movies* look cheap to me.

*On cable or regular DVDs. Blu-ray looks phenomenal though.

  • KB, so what do you think for me? (with no blu-ray player)

120 Hz with some off reviews

    60 Hz with fabulous reviews

  • I'd go with the LG with good reviews. My little brother had a small Vizio (30" or so) for a while, and it was never a great TV so that probably colors my opinion.

I would like to say that the 60 Hz vs. 120 Hz. debate can be largely affected by your cable/Satellite service and also, everyone has different tastes and TV watching needs. We went through 3 TVs before we settled on the one we have and I thought Best Buy was going to ban us from the store.

  • I'm here now. I had a hellacious day at work.

Mames, we have a 42" Vizio that we love. I don't really know the specifics on it because we've had it almost 2 years, but it has been a great tv.

Thanks for the thoughts on the TVs. Maybe I'll go stare at them this week in store. :-/

  • Mames, take a look at Sony XBRs. If you can find an older model like a 4 or 5, they should be much cheaper than the current model and Sony XBRs are AMAZING!!
We have so much time, and so little to do! Strike that, reverse it.

This is what ours is... we got the XBR9 but I couldnt tell the difference between an 8 or a 9 at the store.

  • I've been out all day & coming in late to the conversation, but I'd go with the LG. We have one & we LOVE it. All tv looks amazing on it.

Ours is a 4. It's about 2 years old now. We bought it after the 5s came out and only difference (besides the price) was the edges around the speaker and how many hd inputs it had. The 4 had enough even with all of our electronics.

They put them out so quickly - ours is about 8 months old but the XBR10s were already in the store - but they jumped from LCD to LED and were about $2k more expensive.
