So I was planning on buying a new set of cookware (no one bought the one from our registry, which wasn't a surprise since we registered for All-Clad with the idea of buying with the discount later). I was checking through America's Test Kitchen, and naturally their top pick was All-Clad... but their Best Buy was a set of $150 cookware from Wal-Mart! Has anyone heard of or used the Tramontina Gourmet from Wal-Mart? I saw they had a 10 piece set for $200 that might fit my cooking style better than the smaller set, and it's soooo much cheaper than All-Clad.
Re: Cookware?
we have a cuisinart set (registry gift). comparable, but lower quality on account of how it's not all-clad. i love it. they're deep and that rules, also glass lids.
i'd check those out- especially if you can use the 20% coupon. you'd get around $60 off if they arent on sale at BBB.

My Planning Bio
I've never heard of that set, but if the reviews are good, I'd probably get one open stock skillet to see if I like it. In college I worked in the Home Department of JCPenney, and All-Clad was rarely purchased by anyone because of the high sticker. They stopped carrying after a while. We'd usually show people who liked the pans but not the price similar weight and materials. Calphalon and the Emeril SS set as well as Cuisinart are very comparable. My parents have had an All-Clad set for a looong time and they're still holding up well. Maybe that's why they are so pricey.
I use Anolon Advanced, I have a Circulon 2 skillet and a few choice All-Clad open stock pieces. Stainless steel is best for frying, but All-Clad is more for just a constant cooker, like a chef. Keep browsing - it's a hard purchase to make.
We've been using Costco pots and pans for a while now and I quite like them. Good variety of sizes, great lids, and low price!
We got Circulon Infinite which is a dishwasher-safe hard anodized set. We got it from Macy's on sale and with a coupon, so it really wasn't bad at all and we absolutely love it. We're not good enough cooks to justify a set of all clad, in my opinion.
FWIW, my parents have calphalon contemporary and they've been very happy with it. H and I thought about this set for a long time as well.
EDIT: I also recommend getting an open stock piece just to see if you like it, if possible. Great idea if you're unsure!
B's parents bought a $150 set of Analon for his birthday. They're amazing. We've added accessory pieces to the set because we love the non-stick so much.
I don't know much about other brands or "better" ones as this is the first set of cookware we've used that's "nice".
You don't have to use oil to cook with them as they're non-stick. You can opt to use soft soap with your hand and anything comes right off, you don't need abrasive scrubbers to clean it.
One bad: My cousin was doing dishes as a favor right after I gave birth to DS and she didn't know better but put one of our $75 accessories in the dishwasher and completely ruined the non-stick on it. So they're not dishwasher safe.
This and it's awesome!
