Pros and Cons.....

ok I need to some help I have been thinking about if I'm going back to work or stay home after the babys born.

Pros Ella or Eli  will have great health insurance and I will too

Cons- Daycare cost 170.00 a week and on my pay check I will bring home like a 100.00 after insurance is taken out.

I'm lost on what I want to do we have a lot of thinking to do

What would you do if you were me? Stay home or go back to work

Re: Pros and Cons.....

  • If you dont need/have to work could  you possibly try it out for a few weeks and see if its beneficial to you? You may find its not worth it or you want to be home with the baby or something. But good health insurance is very helpful too... when do you plan on making a decision? Can you wait until after the baby is born? God forbid you or the baby needs the better health insurance for some reason or another!

I will tell you as hard as it is to leave Gio during the day I dont mind it as much as I thought I would...its nice to have that break from him after 3 months of being home and having him attached at my hip :) but if I could I would quit my FT and work PT to spend more time with him during the day.

  • Great health insurance is a perk, as it's not always an easy thing to come by. It's a difficult decision, and you may need to crunch more numbers. Is the insurance thing something you can get through DH's work? And perhaps for extra money you can do part time when DH is home from work to save on child care cost? (Not everyday right when he gets home, just a few days) I think it all weighs on what you two are comfortable with and what you think priorities are financially and family wise for your baby. It's something we're looking into as well. Except for me it's more, can I quit my regular job and do my side business full time, figuring out exactly what I'd have to do (except it wouldn't be as demanding as 8-5, m-f). But either way, we would both prefer me to stay home, even though DH's current salary alone wouldn't allow us to have much of a cushion (or for us to, you know, eat. The baby and animals, yes, Don and I, not as much, lol). It has been talked about perhaps me getting a PT evening / some weekend job for extra cash flow, so I can stay home during the day. But so much will probably change in that time.
  • I"m not going to tell them until I'm on maternity leave!
  • Dhs work doesn't offer insurance for family which sucks but what can you do. I work on a normal school year 11-5:30 and here that considered after school care so of course they charge more. I"m lost its all just spinning in my head I"m more confussed of what I need to do.
  • Also, is it an option at your work to cut back some days, and maybe do you have family or friends that could help watch the baby just a couple days? I also like Pam's suggestion of maybe try it out for a few weeks to stay home.
  • Oh yea I have 90 days with the baby and deff doing to try it out but I have no family near me. everyones hour and 2 hours away

Are you saying that if you don't work, the baby will not be insured at all?  If that's the case, I'd say it's worth you working for insurance alone.  I didn't know companies were not required to provide insurance, is it a really small one?  Will Obama's new health insurance plan provide good enough care?

  • Yea I mean I have to get insurance for the baby we have a thing in Ga called peachcare I'm thinking about applying for it and seeing if we can get it but our insurance is so good at work. I just wish I could find a daycare that was just a little cheaper I'm really going to start looking the week I'm off and do some real thinking and ask parents where there children go maybe keeping my fingers crossed that something will come up.

I have even thought of keeping another child or baby at home I can make money that way too.

  • Generally speaking, I'm of the mindset that if your paycheck is only going to cover daycare costs and not much else (and you really want to stay home/your job will not help you in your future career) then stay home.  That was kind of wordy, but I hope the point is clear.

However, babies require a lot of doctor's visits, so I wouldn't quit my job if you can't find good coverage elsewhere.  If you get coverage as a PT employee, that is something that I would consider.  It would probably cut back on your daycare costs as well (half days or only a few days a week).

You will need insurance.  Speaking as a mom I can't even begin to tell you how many times we have taken Lo to the Dr.  If it's not for immunizations, it's for this or that. Then you have prescriptions on top of that.

One thing you may consider is looking on Craigslist for childcare... I know, I know.. CL * gasp * I have found both of Lo's sitters there.

    GL in your decision.

I was going to suggest that too or maybe you have some friends who can steer you in the right direction. My friends mom does in home daycare and we are using her 3 days a week.. she charges peaannuuttss and she's been doing it for 20yrs.

this... AND start looking now!!!!! and make plans with like 2 or 3 people because plans can change and people can change so start talking to people now! I've found people on Craig's list for both my kids and even knew friends that stayed at home that wanted some extra income!

    this...
  • You can't take the baby to your day care?  They won't offer you a discount?

You need insurance for yourself and a baby.  Kids get hurt and will need to go to the ER at some point.  Keep that in mind.
