Anyone try re-dying black clothes before?

i have umpteen articles of black clothing that i love but are fading into looking sloppy.   i'd like to re-dye everything, but have a feeling the mess involved would have me looking like i murdered a squid.

Re: Anyone try re-dying black clothes before?

  • I have never tried it, but would be concerned about not dyeing evenly and ruining my clothing.
  • If they are getting to the point where you won't wear them, I say there's no harm in trying.

  • Do a test run on something you don't care much about.  That way if it gets ruined, no biggie.

  • it's a last-ditch effort to salvage them.   otherwise they're heading to the Goodwill where people can look at them in disdain, swear at them and mutter about people not realizing the poor have better style than this.

  • I've never done it, but some domestic-related forums I read have ladies that swear by RIT dye for it.

Husbands should be like Kleenex: Soft, strong, and disposable.
  • My mom swears by RIT as well.  If you have a washing machine with an aggitator, you can do it in there some how.  The directions are on the box.

  • I used to re-dye my black work shirts and aprons because I was too cheap to buy newer ones.  I used RIT dye in the washer and it worked really well
  • Yes to RIT. I think you should be fine as long as there's only one type of fabric in the article of clothing. Natural fibers (especially cotton) will take it well, synthetics less so, or not at all.

Watch for spills on the inside of your machine that doesn't wash off on its own, like the inside lip of the lid.

Sometimes I wonder if scientists have never seen a sci-fi movie before. "Oh yes, let's create a super species of deer. NOTHING COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG." I wonder if State Farm offers a Zombie Deer Attack policy. -CaliopeSpidrman
