Austin/San Marcos and Floating the river!

Hi!

A bunch of friends and I are coming down to float the Comal river this weekend and it's a first for me. Any tips on what to bring or do...or companies to rent from?

Also we are staying in Austin Fri night and going to 6th street and staying in San Marcos Sat night. We were going to go to Gruene dance hall Sat night but it's sold out. Any good places to hang out in San Marcos??

TIA!

Re: Austin/San Marcos and Floating the river!

  • Bring a small cooler, plastic bottles (no glass) or cans and water shoes.  There are a few areas where you have to stand up and walk over rocks.  Also, at the first chute, paddle RIGHT RIGHT RIGHT!  :)  I always get sucked into the vortex to the left, so paddle right!  And then when you get to that second little falls right before the bridge, go to the very left and go down the little chute (don't go over the falls, that's a bad idea).

Have fun, I love floating the Comal.  It only takes about 2 hours, so you can do it twice if you're up for it.

Oh and we usually rent for friends (we own our own tubes) at Landa Falls since it's the "Longest Float on the Comal".

  • Does that mean you can float as many times as you want without paying extra each time?

Do you rec a bottomless or bottom tube?

  • Oh definitely a bottomless.  The bottom ones are for wusses and for coolers.  Or small children.  ;)

You can definitely float as many times as you want without paying extra.  Most people will take the shuttle up and do it all again or they'll just get out and do the big tube chute over and over and over--there are ladders out of the water, just climb out walk back to the top and do it again.

  • Ditto everything Joyco said! I am floating the Comal tomorrow. It is pretty high so moving pretty well. After the big tube shoot that Joyco was talking about....definitely go into the next little shoot on your left. MAKE SURE TO LIFT YOUR HINEY as you come to the bottom of it. I have a HUGE bruise from last week!

Landa Falls is my favorite place to send people! (like Joyco...we have our own tubes)

A couple of our favorite places to hang out around NB are:

    Whitewater

    Tavern in the Gruene

    Phoenix Saloon

River Road Icehouse (11 Bones are playing on Saturday night...pretty good band)

I went over the falls once (if we're talking about the same thing). Flipped over backwards and banged my head on the rock on the bottom.  Freaked me the hell out.  And the losers standing at the bottom didn't even attempt to help me.  They were too busy stealing our beer that fell out of our cooler when I went over.

PS. I must be a wuss because I like the tubes w the bottoms.  Especially when the water is low and there are lots of rocks poking out!

For the Comal, it is never that low enough where you would need a bottom.  If you're talking about the Guadalupe, I can see wanting a bottom--there are a TON of low spots where you rub your butt and that hurts, so yeah.  Not a wuss if it's the Guadalupe.  Wuss if it's the Comal.  ;)

And those are the falls I'm talking about.  That's where the guys in scuba gear stand b/c the dumb people go over those falls thinking they'll be just fine and then all the scuba guys dive for sunglasses and all your other lost stuff b/c the people who go over usually topple over.

  • i'll be at the comal with friends too on saturday!

we've been a couple times and it's a great route to take.  Enjoy your float!
