have you been to any of these ports/towns in MX?

La Paz, Ensenada, Mazatlan, Puerto Vallarta, & Cabo San Lucas.

We're going on a Mexican Riviera cruise in January and I'm starting to try and figure out what we're going to do in our ports. I know our ship offers excursions through Carnival, & I'm not opposed to them entirely, I just don't want to over pay or get caught in some tourist traps. We also really aren't lay-on-the-beach-&-drink people, we'll have plenty of time for that on the ship.

Some things I thought would be fun for both of us: touring a tequila factory & a brewery. I know through our ship we can do both of those.

I'm just looking for suggestions any of you lovely ladies may have based on your own knowledge / experiences. Also - if you have any suggestions on local eateries, those would be much appreciated also! :) We're both "foodies" and want to eat local while we're in ports.

  • We got married in PV and I have been there a half dozen times. I can def recommend some restaurants. For things to do, we've done a few different tours, and I love the downtown area. Let me know what you'd be interested in, and I'll see if I can think of anything.

  • Haven't been but will be in Dec.  Take a look at www.shoretrips.com.  It's a resourse for excursions with travel agent reviews.
  • Cindy that website is awesome! Thank you so much.

Meghan I'm definitely interested in anything you can share! :)

  • I went on a cruise about 4 years ago to Mazatlan, Puerto Vallarta, & Cabo San Lucas.

Cabo was our first port...I think by the time we tried to book anything thru the cruise line, anything we liked was booked.  So we just wandered around and shopped.  We went to Cabo Wabo to eat lunch.  That was a fun experience.  I would recommend it.  I have no idea where it was, but it must have been pretty close to port b/c we walked there!

Mazatlan...I think we had booked something but the time changed over and we missed it??  I can't remember what we missed out on doing.  So we wound up getting a tour around town in a van from one of the tour companies that were right at the port.  I don't really have any recs for Mazatlan.

Puerto Vallarta...my fave stop!  We had a lot of time off the ship so we did 2 excursions in one day.  We got a ride to a resort (Paradise Village) and access to the resort/pool for the day.  This was thru the cruise line.  Really fun, but maybe not what you're looking for since you can use the pool/lay out on the ship.  In the evening, we did a pirate ship cruise.  Super fun...I highly recommend it.  Ours was a few hours and included a dinner but I think there are shorter options too.

  • I got married in PV, and we went on several tours and things with Vallarta Adventures. It was awesome, and they are highly recommended. HTH!

  • I'm going on this cruise in November. If you remind me I can tell you my experience!

In Ensenada the only thing I've done is go to Mango Mango. Both times I've been here this is what we did. For $20 you can get a wrist band good for All You Can Drink booze for the whole day. We got a little wasted, had a little fun, then stumbled back to the ship. Though the walk to Mango Mango has some decent shopping I'm sure you can find someplace better.

I LOVED Puerto Vallarta.  Thus far it's my favorite city in Mexico (of the four I've been to).  I didn't leave the hotel much when I was there but what little bit I did I enjoyed.  Be sure to soak up that city- it's beautiful!

  • My favorite restaurant in PV in El Aryan.  It is delish-the chef got all her recipes from her grnadmother-so it is def. authentic.
