b/c options

I am looking for a non-hormonal b/c option. I am going to go to my doctor next week, but I just wanted to know if anyone has any suggestions.

Re: b/c options

  • Fertility Awareness Method.  Read Taking Charge of Your Fertility.  Basically, you chart your cervical fluid and waking temperatures to determine when you're fertile.  It can be used to avoid as well as conceive.

I've been doing it for about a year and I love it.  I was on BCP for close to 6 years and always felt like a hormonal lunatic.  Being myself again is great.

  • Along with the PP's suggestion you could also look into a non-hormonal IUD. There are also barrier methods (like condoms/diaphragm).
  • Paragard (non hormonal) iud. I've had mine 2 yrs and love it. Only down side, periods are heavier ( only 2 days are really heavy then it's normal the other 3) and pretty bad cramps for 2 days but only sometimes. Some months I don't have cramps at all. Btw, I do not have any children. I know some dr.s don't want to do an iud if a woman hasn't had kids which IMHO is total bs.

  • Thanks I will check it out. My decision as of now is between Paragard and FAM/NFP. I am reading Taking Charge of Your Fertility right now.
  • I have a Paraguard but my periods havent changed. I love that thing. Not having to worry about taking a pill or changing it or hormones is awesome.
  • I'm glad this post is here.  I was using NuvaRing (just took it out for regular cycle this week and thats the last of it for me) until I saw recent studies on it containing Bisphenol A (BPA) and leaving toxins in blood stream and possibly causing birth defect.  I'm not willing to take that risk.  I do not really want to put extra hormones in my body since I don't need to address overbearing pms pains or acne or anything like that.  I want to try natural family planning - but talking to my DH about that is difficult since we are not even close to ready to TTC.

New adventure for us to figure out.  Looking forward to talking to my doctor and  seeing what is discussed here.

  • Ya, I am taking mine out next week and that is it. What we are doing is using the fertility awareness method and spermicide for extra safety. I think your DH will be much more accepting if you have something like spermicide along with the FAM or NFP. Check out the book Taking Control of Your Fertility. It makes a lot of sense.

Have your DH read it, too.  It will help immensely.

  • note taken, didn't even think about that.
