Now I'm the idiot

To thaw meat I always put it in a ziploc and put it in the sink with really hot water.  I was thawing chicken for dinner and running the SpotBot where one of the cats puked at the same time.  The SpotBot finished and I heard another noise which I realized was the sink...still running.  Luckily I got there in the last possible second before it ran over and made a huge mess.  But now I can't let any of the water out because it's way too hot to put my hand in there.

I blame it on TN because I was busy reading posts and not paying attention to what I was doing.

  • lol well I set off our smoke detector for the first time in MONTHS while making dinner tonight! A pot was about to boil over and so I grabbed it but I splashed some of the contents out onto the burner.

I did that about a month ago.  We have two smoke detectors and they would not stop!  Luckily they're really close together (why have two then?), so I stood there with pillows over both of them until they finally stopped.

  • I was very glad ours only went off for a few seconds :)

  • I am easily distracted by almost everything (LOOK!  Something shiny!!) so this happens to me frequently.  It's part of the reason that I try not to cook, and just let HH handle that.

Ha... me too!!!  At our last house, I tried to cook a pizza and didn't realize that there was a vent that runs up through one of the burners on the stove.  I had a bubba keg sitting on the burner (don't ask why because I have no clue why I put it there)... anyway, I went back in the kitchen and it was on FIRE!!!  Completely melted all over the stove and stunk up the whole house.  Adam still won't stop messing with me about that.

We brought our bubba kegs on our HM.  We were the only people at the resort who didn't have to drink their beer out of those little plastic cups.  It was AWESOME not having to get a refill every five minutes!!  The pizza at the resort sucked though :(

  • I know this may sound crazy but it does speed up the process of defrosting but if you have a non stick frying pan or pot you can place your frozen meat in that and the teflon (sp?) absords the cold. Its crazy but it will defrost things twice as fast as just setting it out. Try it its awesome!!

Oooohhh Pam I am totally going to try this! We always keep chicken and hamburger in the freezer and don't think about getting it out to thaw until way too late.

Ummmm.... this is probably the Chef/crazy food code person in me talking but this is the ABSOLUTE WORST WAY TO THAW MEAT!!! Especially chicken!  While the middle of your meat may still be frozen, you are beginning to cook the outside and hot water will only begin this process, leaving the food at an unsafe temperature throughout the whole time you are thawing.  Bacteria (salmonella, e. coli, etc) THRIVES between 40 and 135 degrees F.  Ideally, you would use cold or room temp water to thaw meat.  (OR overnight in the fridge... but honestly no one ever remembers to do this! HAHA!)

Again... I'm just a little nutty about this kind of stuff.  Having safety and sanitation procedures drilled into my head for years in school and then at work has made me a little crazy.  I mean... if you haven't gotten sick or anything than that's awesome and keep on doin what your doin... but just a heads up!

I usually do it right before I'm going to cook it and it only takes like 15 minutes to thaw.  So I should be ok right?  It's not like it's sitting in the water for an hour or so or sitting around after I thaw it.
