I'm just curious how everyone feels and what things should be considered about electric cars.
I've heard that Nissan is coming out with a new car that is purely electric, no gas. I guess you would charge it at home, in your wall, and it would run for 100 miles. So it's ideal for a commute or short trips to the store.
I mentioned it to Dave and we don't need a new car, but I think it's an interesting concept. I mean, if we didn't both work in completely different areas or Pittsburgh, we wouldn't really need 2 cars. So it would be something I might consider when we need another car again.
What are everyone's thoughts on that, and what are the possible pros and cons of this?
Dave said it might take a lot in electricity and you'd have to try to figure out if the rise in electric bill would be worth it. He also wondered if you would need some kind of adapter for the wall outlet. I think it would be great for either of our commutes, and would even work for a girls' night out or something, if we wanted to go separate ways some evening or weekend day.
Re: Opinions on electric cars
I think electric cars are nice you save on gas but remembering to plug it up is a whole other story.
Do you need but something special in my house to plug it up and how much more is my power bill going be? How may miles until have no power?
These are all the crazy questions that go in my head about the electric cars but I do know they use gas too.
I think this new electric car is the first that actually won't use any gas. Although I wonder what would happen if you "ran out" of charge in the battery. Would you need a special charger, or could you use jumper cables for the battery?
I'll see if I can find information on this new car, make sure it's just electric. I have an Altima and was sitting at the dealership when I heard about it. I think it's called the Leaf.

Yep, it's the Leaf. Here it is in Wikipedia, and will be available in limited quantities in December (online order only) and then in lots in the spring of next year. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nissan_Leaf
"Based on third-party test drives, reviewers have found that the mileage distance from one single charge can vary up to 40 percent in real-world situation, from about 62 miles (100 km) to almost 138 miles (222 km) depending on weather, traffic conditions, accessory use, load and driving style" This definitely sounds like a negative... Unless you can guarantee you'll drive less than 62 miles.
Actually, another negative I just thought of- you know how sometimes batteries lose the amount they can fully charge if you charge them when they aren't completely dead? I wonder if that could happen here.
And here's the answer on charging: "U.S. electrical regulations require a 240V charging station to be permanently wired to an AC outlet" Looks like you could use a standard wall outlet (110V) but it would take 20 hours to charge. The 240V charging station would take 8 hours to charge.
I wonder how much it will cost, I didn't see that. Looks like these chargers are REALLY expensive though.

I would only buy a fully electric car if I could afford a Tesla.
I saw one on TV and it looks amazing. Very expensive though. If I were to get a new car I would go for a hybrid right now.
Oh I really like the picture!
I kind of weighed in before. I love the idea of the electric car but I am hoping that they'll come down in price and have better technology in a few years. I'm excited about the idea though! That's probably obvious in my other posts, haha...

Tesla is suppose to start making a car for about $40-60,000 near where I live. I saw one when I was driving to LA a couple weeks ago. They are a cool looking car. The people had stopped to charge the car at a gas station.
