On the flight to visit my parents last week, I sat next to a very large woman. She couldn't put the arm rest down and was sitting into my seat, so I couldn't sit all the way back on that side. I'm somewhat overweight myself and don't want to be mean, but it was so uncomfortable and my back hurt from sitting so awkwardly. This lady was at a size where she probably couldn't use a regular bathroom stall.
I emailed the airline, to see what could have been done. I know I could have spoken to the flight attendant, but felt so bad about embarrassing the lady. The flight was booked, otherwise I would have asked to move seats. Did anyone have this happen before? What would you have done?
Re: Airplanes- wondering if this has happened to you...
wow, that must have been AWKWARD!
if there had been seats available, i think i might have gotten up out of my seat, as if to use the restroom, and then spoken to the flight attendant while i was out of my seat. as there weren't any, though, i probably would have also toughed it out.
i'll bet the airline doesn't want to say anything because of that whole kevin smith debacle from last year.

It's unfortunate, but I don't think there is anything you can do. There was debate about making extra large people pay for 2 seats, but I don't think anything ever came of it. I'm not a skinny person, but I also don't take up 2 seats...but, if I did, I may consider purchasing 2 seats just so I wouldn't disturb someone sitting next to me and also be more comfortable myself. Did she apologize at all? Just curious.
This used to happen to me all the time on the express bus. An extra large man or woman would squish me into a seat and the whole ride would be so uncomfortable, but what can ya do?
