Etiquette fail!

I got a baby shower invite that failed horribly, it made me laugh.

It was sent from the mother to be, her handwriting, and return address.

This is her second daughter, I have been raised that 2nd, 3rd etc children don't really get showers.  If people want to buy you a gift, they will!  (Especially same sex.)

Just got it on 20th, shower is on the 1st.

It says it is hosted by her sister but obviously, not really.

It was seriously hand written on an 8.5 X 11 sheet of paper, and trifolded, sealed with a sticker.

It was addressed to Briana "Maiden Name", seriously.  She KNOWS my last name, there is no doubt about that!

I hate to admit, this is a cousin of mine.  It is true what they say, you can't choose your own family.  (I have not decided if I am going.)  They did not come to the last party we hosted (my sisters graduation) and I have not seen them since Christmas.

Re: Etiquette fail!

  • I wouldn't go.  I would send her a package of diapers addressed to "Insert incorrect baby name here, c/o Mother's first and maiden name."  :)

  • Yeah...that is beyond tacky. I guess some people just were never taught what is proper etiquette. Especially if it's the same sex she would have all of the basic things she needs for the new baby.

I've never liked the idea of second showers. I do like the idea of having a "sprinkle" or my mom calls it a "sip and see the baby". After the baby is born you have a small get together (mainly family or close friends) and everyone comes and see the baby.

I don't think I would go. I would send a nice card after the baby was born with maybe a gc to somewhere that they could use to get basic things but that would be it.

  • If it were me, I don't think I'd go. Especially if the two of us weren't very close. IMO, I say send a card and a small, inexpensive gift--cute photo frame from Hobby Lobby or something.

Ack. One of my biggest pet peeves if lack of etiquette.

  • Send a card and let her know that you hope the outfit you bought for baby number one fits the second one nicely!  HA.

  • Oh my. I attended a bridal shower that was hosted by the bride and I couldn't keep my mouth off the floor. I would find something to fill that time spot on the calendar and respectfully decline. Send a $20 or less gc or a package of diapers like jlimberg suggested, then teach a class lol!

  • Oh, let me add to the "fail"...  I looked at her THREE registries.  There are 9 thermometers, 8 or 9 swing/bouncy things, 3 strollers (all full size), 4 PNPs and 3 highchairs.

Someone is either really greedy or totally indecisive.  OR I am totally clueless about what a baby really needs.

I think I will go, I will pull up my big girl panties and buy her an outfit or two but I will not be spending over $20.

I like this idea.  Some people have no clue!

Um, shouldn't she already have a swing/bouncy thing, a stroller and PNP? I can kind of see where she may need another highchair depending on the age of her first child.

The shower just sounds tacky all the way around.

I do have to admit that I help plan.host a baby shower for one of my best friends when she was expecting her 3rd daughter BUT her to oldest are 6 and 7 and there were alot of things she didn't keep and needed again. However she did not register anywhere and we only invited close family and friends and we all got her things she would need and she bought all of the bigger items since she didn't want other people to feel like they needed to buy them since everyone there was at her shower for the other girls.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way.  I went to a baby shower a few weeks ago for a friend pregnant with baby #2.  First one was a boy, this one's a girl so the shower itself didn't bother me too much.  However, she was registered at THREE places!  Her son is only 2--how much stuff could she possible need (other than girl clothes of course)???

I probably wouldn't go, but good for you for going--and definitely don't spend more than $20!
  • Wow, I can't wait to see what people say about me when #2 rolls around! I really have no problem with having a second shower for a second baby. My aunts have always thrown showers for all my cousin's babies, not just their first borns. If they throw me one, I won't decline. And I might register more than one place. Surprise

Now, will you see me throwing myself a shower and mailing out my own invites? No way.

  • I would understand if maybe there was a large age difference and she didn't have anything left over but come'on with the self written invites. I don't have a problem with a small thing but I have so much crap from Conner (besides the stuff I don't expect people to buy like a better breast pump and a double stroller) that I don't need anything and it would be pointless to register.
