I have a hair appointment tomorrow to finally get my hair cut (I haven't even had it trimmed in almost a year). How important is it to have a picture to take with you to get what you want?
To give an idea of what I'm getting - my hair is currently down to my middle back all one length and I only really want a little bit off the length off (like 1/2 inch) and have long layers put in it to give it a little something. Oh, and without trying my hair is board straight
Re: Hair style/cut question
The only time I took in a photo was when I was seeing someone new, and I ended up unhappy with the cut! Now (especially if it's someone new), I tell them what my hair is like, how much maintenance I'm willing to put in (i.e., blow dry with a round brush or not, etc.), and the length I want. I've been lucky enough to have them know what to do from there!

Guess it depends on how much you trust your stylist. Visuals are usually good but just know that it'll never look exactly like the photo.
I only get cuts 1-2 times a year these days myself but I get them for "free" and I give the stylist minimal input because I trust them completely not to make me look like an idiot.
The last time I wound up with the best cut ever. Really really loved it and still love it 5 months later as it's grown out. Has lots and lots of layers but I never have to "do" my hair... just let it air dry or do a quick blast with the dryer it if it needs to be dry quickly. Don't use product or any other tools. But my hair has a slight wave to it I think so that probably helps a little.

See, this is the problem...I haven't found anyone down here to cut my hair yet. I went with a recommendation from my boss (Aziz) who was pleased with them, but I've never actually been there. And I'm really cheap because before moving down here a couple years ago I went to a place that was $15 for a cut and style and they did an awesome job everytime! I am really having a hard time shelling out more money that that. But I also realize that you usually get what you pay for.
I think I'll probably just go in and talk to them and describe what I want and trust that I won't look like a fool when I leave
I think if you tell them what you want - just a trim, 1/2 inch off, and some long layers - they will know exactly what you are talking about.
I got lucky yesterday....I didn't have a picture and I got 14 inches chopped off. I told her I wanted an angled bob, longer in the front and stacked in the back. And that's exactly what she did and I love it!
ali - want to post an after photo???
i reeeallly want to be brave enough for a stacked bob - but I can't get the guts/imagine it on myself.

I will! I'm going to do a whole blog entry about it because donating my hair is on my 30 To Do list. I'll post when its posted
btw - I absolutely love it. My hair was so long and it feels almost exhilarating to have it all gone.
