Dry skin help

Ok, I seriously have the dryest skin ever on my face. I use cetaphil liquid cleanser, I exfoliate a few times a week with St Ives, and I use a very thick Pond's cream for dry skin as a moisturizer. Otherwise, I have no idea what is causing this. It's like I have face dandruff or something! Anyone have anything to recommend? Oh, and I drink water all day long, so I know it's not dehydration.

Re: Dry skin help

  • I found when I was using St. Ives that it was drying my skin out pretty badly (and I have the worlds most oily skin).  I asked around and found out that St. Ives is actually pretty damaging to your skin (tears it and dries it out).  Maybe try a different exfoliator?
  • Where on your face is the "dandruff"?  If it's around your nose or eyes it may not be dry skin--it's sebacious dematitis--which IS face dandruff and I have a prescription that works great for it.
  • the dry skin is everywhere, my forehead, cheeks, and chin.
  • maybe it's some sort of allergic reation.
  • I get it too sometimes in those areas.  I agree with St. Ives...definitely not good for you!  I use Olay moisturizer and love it!  It works great and really keeps my skin hydrated since I've started using it.  I also use a night cream of theirs as well and that helps too.  But it could be your cleansers too...I don't know.
  • I agree with the St.Ives. Perhaps try a new exfoliator for a while. Also, I lovelovelove my daily moisturiser, Aveeno (ageless something or another) with SPF 30. It's not watery, doesn't cause pore build-up, and isn't greasy feeling!
  • DH has the same issue and nothing was working for him until he tried Origins Dr. Weil's Mushroom line. It's expensive but he feels it's worth it. And he doesn't usually understand why people need pricey products.
  • Definitely stop using St. Ives. It's really bad for your skin. I would suggest using Eucerin at night and then using a lighter (not as greasy) lotion like Aveeno in the morning under your makeup.
  • What would y'all recommend for an exfoliator then? With my dry skin I really need one, or the dry skin will cause breakouts since it builds up in my pores. Thanks!
  • If it doesn't clear up, I recommend an appt. w/a good esthetician (spell check, please!). I had similar problems this winter. I had a facial and am using the products that she recommended. They were a bit pricey, but one bottle of cleanser has lasted several months. I am using fragrance free Olay moisturizer. I haven't had a problem in the last few months. As a last resort, you could try a dermatologist.
  • I would go to a dermatologist before you just start switching cleansing products, they can recommend OTC products for your skin type instead of just guessing around. What works for one person definitely doesn't work for others.

A facial may be a good idea too. It could remove the dead dry skin and then you could start fresh with the new products.

  • Okay, so I just went to Target and goes some new skin stuff. I got Aveeno Skin Brightening Daily Scrub as an exfoliator, Aveeno Ultra Calming Moisturizing Cream Cleanser (my skin is also kind of red, especially in the T zone), Aveeno Ultra Calming Daily Moisturizer with SPF 30 (for daytime use), plus Eucerin Dry Skin Therapy Plus Intensive Repair for nightime use. I'm hoping this makes a difference. If not, I will have to go back to the dermatologist, although mine doesn't really seem to be much help with cosmetic issues, mostly acne, moles, etc.
