Tell us about the *first* apartment you rented, with friends/roommates, or by yourself.
Re: Throwback Thursday
i'll tell you about the first one that WASN'T college, because the apartment market there was out of control and not worth talking about.
it was in queens, and my roommate was a guy i had worked with back in PA. it was the cutest place...very old, with solid plaster walls, pocket doors between the living and dining rooms, and brick floors in the kitchen. i would have lived there until i moved in with DH, but my roomie's boyfriend came to live with us, and the bedrooms were way to small to be shared.

Believe it or not, my first apartment wasn't till i was about 21/22 and my roommate was my older sister! I lived at my parent's house all thru college!
We had a pretty nice 2br in Las Cruces, NM. There was carpet, which my sister's former roommate/friend's cat *peed* on in my room. And we couldn't get it out so we ended up not getting all of our deposit back in the end...grr... I painted my room a bright blue with a darker blue border around the window and had a blue floral bedspread that matched. But man, it was hard to paint it back when we moved out!!
My sister was one of the best roommate's i've ever had (besides DH) cuz yeah, we'd fight, but then we'd get over it. We had to since we were related!

My first apartment was in Boston. I moved in with a college friend. It was a total dump but walking distance to the hospitals where we both worked and in a cute neighborhood with easy access to necessities. But the landlord was a total scumbag. He would routinely turn the heat down to below the legal limit. We would call to complain and he would come over in his heavy coat saying that it wasn't a problem. He even turned the heat off completely on Christmas thinking everyone would be away. My roommate was there because she had to work early the next day. There was two other apartments in our building and quickly became friends with the other residents. I remained friendly with one of the sets of roommates even after I moved out.
My roommate and I had a huge falling out after we moved. In part because she tried to sue me over some dumb stuff relating to that hellhole. She and I don't really talk anymore, although I do see her in group settings. I don't think she was cut out to have a roommate. As evidenced by her living alone since then.
I loved my first apartment in Philadelphia. I moved there right out of college to work at a big regional theatre. The apartment was above a private law practice and the owner of the firm was our landlord. He was the best landlord I have ever had. It was 1 BLOCK from work. I could literary roll out of bed 20 mins before I had to be at work. Amazing. It was also really nice and big. My room was huge and had great big windows on three sides and the kitchen was brand new. The best part about it was that it was super cheap. $1100 for a big 2 bedroom in center city Philadelphia! My roommate was awesome. She is a stage manager and worked at the theatre at nights and I worked during the day, so we almost always had the apt. to ourselves. I wish I could transport that place to NYC!
In college I rented a house with 5 of my girlfriends. We were all on the dance team, so it became the "dance team house".
My first apartment was with DH - we lived in a tiny studio in San Jose, CA for the summer after my first year of law school. The two of us and our big cat. :-) The funny thing is I had more closet space in that apartment than I do now! It had a HUGE walk-in closet that DH and I split. The closets were so big that families used them as bedrooms for kids - when the health department would come to inspect the complex, the super would put up signs asking everyone to remove the beds from the closets. Apparently it's illegal to keep a bed in a closet :-) It wasn't exactly the more affluent part of San Jose!
