Where the heck do I register my car?

So, I'm living in Wisconsin for all of three more weeks but my car tags expire next week.  I'm using my parents address in Minnesota as my official address and in three weeks I'll be living in Phoenix.

So where do I get my new registration from?  Wisconsin?  Minnesota?  Arizona?

None of the DMV websites have been any help at all, this is soooo frustrating!

Re: Where the heck do I register my car?

  • I would think Minnesota. Where is your license from and in what state are you insured?
  • That's a tough one.  Because technically you'll have like 90 days(each state differs) to have you car registered wherever you are going to move.

You license should match you are registration as well.  However, I would get your tags wherever you are living now or MN so that your car is legal, then worry about changing it to whereever you are living when they expire.

  • Haha, I'm even more confused!  My license is from California as is my insurance but that will change in August, too (I'm going on my parents, so it will be from MN).  I talked to my Mom and she's going to register my car in MN.  I'll then keep my CA license for the time being and before it expires I'll register in AZ.
  • I'm pretty sure (legally) your license, tags, and insurance all need to have the same address.
  • Wherever it's cheaper ;)

    Very Good point!

    This.
  • So... I figured out the answer to my question!  I went into the County Clerk's office here in town (the DMV was closed but they are a DMV agent) and she gave me a 30 day temporary registration.  She said if I wanted more than that I'd have to register and transfer my title but I did NOT need to get a license since I have 90 days to do that and she told me that no one ever bothers to check it.  Haha!  But, I only needed the 30 days.

I think for the time being I do the title transfer and registration and get my new license from there, too.  Then next year if I'm still in Phoenix I'll get everything transfered over to AZ.  But since I won't technically have a physical address in AZ (I'm getting a PO box since I'll be moving around a lot, I think) for a while it'll be hard to get that done in AZ.

Ugh, this is just annoying, though.  I think car registration should be federal and we all pay on flat fee.  Preferably a small one.
