How do you get man sweat smell out of clothes?

Alright, is my man the only one who has clothes that have the perma-sweat man smell in tshirts that he wears regularly?  I tried vinegar but it didn't do much, maybe I didn't let it sit long enough.  Anything else you can think of that will get rid of it?  I'd rather just throw them away one by one but some are his favorites.

  • Adam doesn't ever really smell.  He could be like Matthew McConaughey and not wear deodorant (but he does wear it anyway).  Hell, my pits smell worse than his do!!  haha....  Try baking soda.  It does really well to help absorb odors.  Just sprinkle some in the washer next time you do a load of his laundry.

  • I don't have this problem with his shirts, but with his baseball hats. He has 2 that he wears over and over. I'll wash it one day and it will be clean and fresh, the next after he wears it to work it smells awful again. I use Gain detergent with a scoop of Sun detergent booster (its an oxyclean off brand) every time I wash clothes. But if I'm washing one of his hats I spray it with Shout really good before I put it in. HH loves the scent of Gain and doesn't like it if I buy anything else.

  • I love gain too!!!  That's what I usually use.  I think Febreze also makes a laundry additive that you can pour in along with your regular detergent.

  • I was in charge of the laundry for the whole family when I was growing up. My dad and brother dig graves for a living, so they sweat A LOT and get really, really dirty. I wouldn't let my mom buy anything other than Wisk powdered detergent. It was the only thing that got the caked-in mud out of their pants and shirts.

I would do what Stu suggested, too, and add a half-cup of baking soda to the wash along with your detergent. It's supposed to work wonders.

  • There is a wood cleaner that works reallllly great in the laundry, I think it's called Murphy's Wood Soap.  It even has directions on the back for laundry help.  Good luck!

I use this on our floors! I had no idea you could use it in the washer to.

  • Hmmm reading this post kind of shocked me!  Not because of your stinky man, lol!  But because I just now realized how shocking it is that my guy's stuff DOESN'T have ingrained stink!  I have mentioned before that he is a hockey player - and I don't know if any of you have experience with hockey gear, but it is literally the WORST stinkiest smelling athletic gear.  It is absolutely impossible to wash hockey pants, or hockey skates, or lots of the other gear, so I just have to spray it down with Febreeze and hope for the best.  But the stuff that he wears right next to his skin (his long pants, they look like tights, lol, undershirt, etc...) that stuff is literally soaking wet when he gets it home.  It's as if he ran it under a tap.  So gross.  But I just chuck it in the washer with some Purex (we like the "after rain" smell) and it comes out smelling good as new!

Adam works construction and comes home soaking wet, too, but fortunately, not smelly at all!!!

  • Wait, I lied.... his socks smell.  He wears two pairs of socks with his boots because he broke both of his feet before I met him so it hurts him to only wear one pair...  well, two pairs of socks + steel toe boots + 95 degree weather does not equal pleasant.

  • My HH plays hockey too! And I agree, the hockey stench is like nothing else I have experienced.

My HH stuff doesnt really smell but he gets awful pit stains. I make a mixture of half baking soda half hydrogen peroxide and mix it together, and apply to the pit stains on shirts. Let it soak in over night and then wash regularly. I swear I reclaimed about 10 work shirts and even more for him.

  • I think the key might be to just wash the stuff asap.  Because sweat itself doesn't actually stink, it's only OLD sweat that stinks...like if you've let it sit and get dry.  It's the reason that you don't stink when you're sweating at the gym, but if you don't shower and you go home in your gym clothes and sit in them for a few hours, you're pretty rank.

I googled (yes, I love google) and this is what I found.  I remember learning this in health class in junior high too...

The actual sweat of a human does not stink. The underarm areas are breeding grounds for odor-causing bacteria, the armpits are among the most consistent warm places on the body; and sweat glands produce water; hence a home for bacteria and stink. The smell is produced when bacteria proliferate in the warm moist environment on the body. Bacteria are active at a certain pH; a human body's pH differs from one to another; that's why some people may stink worse than others may. If your pH is abnormal then you will attract more bacteria, which is not found on people with normal pH. Many deodorants today have antibacterial fighting agents, like propylene glycol and triclosan, in the ingredients that inhibit the growth of bacteria. Besides using stronger deodorants with antibacterial ingredients; you may want to think about changing your diet. Sugars and Starches found in empty carbohydrates causes an individual's pH to be abnormal.

  • Ok apparently mine is the only stinky one, lol.  Let me say though that it's not BO, it's like a deoderant, old shirt, wearing it over and over smell.  I'm sure the 90+ degree weather with the 90+% humidity doesn't help.

    Thanks for your ideas!

jewhaley - ditto on the hockey gear.

  • You are not the only one with that problem. DH has shirts that have that man stink. I use Gain. DH did find Purex Gel. I also bought some fabric softener. They both work wonders and get all the dirt and smell out. :)

  • BURN EM! J/J....you know what stinks really bad too....my soccer chin (shin?) guards....BARF.

Anyway....Cody isn't horrible....even though he works outside in 100 degree weather but we use Purex and sometimes the Arm and Hammer detergent and it works pretty well.
