What does it mean to be legally blind?
I hear people throwing this around all the time "I am legally blind" and considering there is a hefty tax deduction involved, I am curious - how do you know if you are legally blind? My glasses prescription is -9.5 which is pretty damn bad (the worst of anyone I know that claims they are "legally blind") so I am wondering if there is some sort of scientific approach to this I can provide as support for my tax return.
Always a CPA, always looking for a deduction...
Re: What does it mean to be legally blind?
I have a friend who is legally blind, actually. Legally blind means that your vision is impaired even WITH contacts and glasses. She can see, technically, with glasses. However, any text must be hugely enlarged, she can't drive, and she has to use one of those sticks because she has absolutely no depth perception. Trust me, this isn't something you qualify for, and that's a d@mned good thing.
Anything worse than 20/200 is legally blind.
I think my left eye is 20/250 or worse. I am legally partially blind :P I was born like this and there's no way to fix it so I just kind of go through life without depth perception. It's neat.
The American Optometric Association states that a person with 20/20 vision can clearly identify a row of 9mm letters from 20 feet. A legally blind person with vision of 20/200 has to be as close as 20 feet to identify objects that people with normal vision can spot from 200 feet. So a legally blind person needs a distance of two feet to spot the letters on a standard eye chart that is 20 feet away.
Okay, so I just held up a book with a big title about 3 inches from my left eye and only then could I read it lol.
If you are legally blind you qualify for an extra personal exemption - this is only blindness - special section of the code.
Yes, more than likely. It bothers me when people say stuff like that. If they were blind, they probably wouldn't joke about it that much
I also know people who joke about being partially deaf, and knowing a music teacher (I work with him) who really is mostly deaf in one ear, I don't laugh.
Nice. My sister has lost all of her hearing in one ear and over 50% in the other ear, so it's definitely no joke there.
