Meg

My dentist is recommending braces, too, and invisalign won't work for me, either.  I'll be interested in hearing how this works as an adult and how you feel...

I travel internationally for my job, and I'm really hesitating because I don't want to look like a huge dork. Tongue Tied

Re: Meg

  • So far, both of the orthodontists I've seen have recommended self-ligating braces.  The first I saw uses the Damon system, which has a completely clear bracket, and the second uses In-Ovation which has a clear and metal hybrid bracket.  I have one more consultation the first week of August.

I'm inclined to go with the Damon braces since the clear bracket is pretty discreet, I liked that orthodontist's office better (she has more adult patients), and it was going to be $600 less for the whole treatment.

I think adult orthodontia is becoming pretty mainstream.  A police chief I know had them in the past few years.  Someone told me it's like getting a new car - once you get it, you notice that everyone has the same one.  I interact with a lot of public officials in my job, so it is a consideration that I will look like a dork for awhile, but I think in the long term, straight teeth will make me look more professional and polished.

It'll be 18-24 months of braces, which is a relatively short amount of time.  I'm probably going to get pregnant again in that window.  Being pregnant isn't exactly the coolest and non-awkward thing ever, so I might as well get all the awkwardness over all at once.

I haven't gotten far enough to find out about Damon or In-Ovation- haven't even heard of either of those!

Do you know if you can use the... I can't remember what it's called but as part of your healthcare at work, you can put money into an account to use towards medical expenses (prescriptions, etc) and that money doesn't count towards taxes.  Can you use that to save up or pay for the braces?

I am budding in.......I am almost positive you can you use flexible spending for braces.  Your HR should be able to answer that question.

Yes, you can use FSA to pay for braces.  I didn't put any money in mine this year, but I will be for next year and the year after, since I'll be making monthly payments to the orthodontists (both of the orthos I've seen so far offer interest-free in-office payment plans).
