What to get a 1-year old?

I'm going to meet my friend's baby for the first time when we all gather in NY for a wedding in a few weeks.  I missed his first birthday recently and would really like to get him something.  I made him a crochet blanket before he was born so I think doing another craft item might be out.  I'm happy to buy something, but what does one get for a 1-year-old?
I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

Re: What to get a 1-year old?

  • A learning toy? My best friends daughter just turned one, and I just bought her a bunch of clothes. But she got a lot of toys to help her develop motor skills and a lot of ABC-123 talking toys.

  • While I'm not a mom, nor do I have many friends who are, I'd imagine that they already get/got lots of toys as gifts. I'd be more inclinded to give them a GC to a store or a savings bond.

Maybe you can fold the blanket in a way so that you can tuck the GC partly into the blanket?

  • I like to give books.  Kids have so many toys and I don't want to add to that.  Books are great and easy to put away neatly on a shelf.  Board books are probably best for a 1 year old, but you could also get some for him to grow into, as well.
  • I love books. I am also a fan of musical toys.  So many people give boys trucks etc. Another idea is a membership to a local kids place.  You may be able to get a membership to a museum, puppet theater, music class, movement class or something that the family can do together.  Experience gifts are great!

  • I usually buy clothes for whatever season is coming up because I find that they have clothes for the current season, but they grow so fast that a lot of that stuff can't be transferred between seasons.

     Good luck!

  • Books are a good idea; I've done that before and the parents loved it.  The museum idea is great too, but probably out of my price range.

I can always do the standard Chinese thing and give money in a red envelope but I was hoping for an actual item.  I dunno, we'll see.  Thanks for all the great suggestions though!

  • I don't know about you but I grew up playing with the Fisher Price Little People.  It's some big anniversary of them so they have reproductions of a few of the old sets.  I bought my nephew the farm for his birthday.

  • I also like to give books or clothes.

(clothes esp because people buy tons of clothes for the whole first year but then not as the child grows up.)

Ditto this. It may not always be as fun for the kid, so if you give a book and clothes that is good, but I always try to give clothes because it helps the parent out. Typically clothes are more of a need than toys.

  • I usually give clothes and a small toy. I love buying kids clothes. I'm buying my god daughter an add a pearl necklace for her first birthday and I'll get her an outfit too.
