Scrapbooking Challenges?

I have been looking through my layouts and realizing that I tend to rely on the same style. I would love to try some new things and expand on my layouts. Is there a place where I can get involved in some challenges that might help me to be more creative? I am thinking of challenges that post a page map and/or an embellishment and then you create a layout based on that.  Also, if you do a lot of multiple picture layouts, how do you vary them so they don't look so boring? I am working on some scrapbook for a family member and she prefers to have lots of pictures versus focusing on 1 or 2. It is making it hard to be too creative.

If you don't know of a place, would anyone be interested in doing something like this with me?

Re: Scrapbooking Challenges?

  • I tend to fall along the same lines as you. I can really do some great pages and then others I just seem to wing it and want to get them done and they look like crap. I would like to start looking at layouts and possibly using them to help guide me. So I am right along with you :)

  • I am bad at following challenges because I usually don't have enough time to make the page before the deadline.  But these are some places that I know post sketches/challenges on a fairly regular basis:

    Studio Calico blog

Stacy Julian's I love color challenges

    Paperclipping

I made a list a long time ago of personal challenges to get me jump-started:

    Normal 0 0 1 92 529 4 1 649 11.1287 0 0 0

    1. Use an unopened product
    2. Use a type of embellishment you have never used before
    3. Use ribbon in a new way (i.e. not in a straight line across the page)
    4. Use paper that you purchased with no plan in mind
    5. Use paper that you purchased for a specific purpose for that purpose
    6. Use paper that you purchased for a specific purpose for a different purpose
    7. Create a layout using a sketch from pagemaps.com
    8. Create a new page (not one you already have an idea for) with only supplies that you already have ? no new purchases to finish it off!
    9. Create a layout that uses up scraps from previous projects.
    10. Create a layout based on a trendy color combination.

  • I do the same thing. If you want to start a weekly/biweekly/monthly challenge on here i'll participate whenever I can.
  • Sorry about the random numbers!  I copied and pasted from Word and can't seem to figure out how to get them out.

One other idea if you are feeling like you want to branch out would be to take a class at Big Picture Scrapbooking.  I have taken two there and they both inspired me with a ton of ideas!

  • I am totally not trying to intrude on your post, but I would love to participate in a biweekly/monthly challenge if we could do that here.  I love scrapping and would also like to get into cards, so anything like challenges that would get me started would be great!

1.) Do you prefer a challenges for scrapbooking layouts and/or cards? Both layouts and cards would be great.

2.) Do you prefer weekly, bi-weekly or monthly challenges? Bi-weekly for layouts, weekly for cards

3.) Any suggestions for challenges? I really like the idea of using pagemaps.com for challenges that cia mentioned in her post. Using new embellishments or embellishments in a different way sounds good also.Pretty much anything that will get me to be more creative. :)

  • 1.) Do you prefer a challenges for scrapbooking layouts and/or cards?

I think both scrapbooking layouts and cards.  I enjoy making cards but I'm just getting started on them.

1.) Do you prefer a challenges for scrapbooking layouts and/or cards? Either

2.) Do you prefer weekly, bi-weekly or monthly challenges? Monthly might be better for me. There are some weeks that I don't have the time to touch it.

3.) Any suggestions for challenges? Maybe find a blog or two that does challenges and use theirs.

WishesSheCouldCook: That would be great if you could help me to organize the challenges! We can alternate posting the emails and reminders and maybe coming up with some challenges?

I was thinking for the cards  we could post the challenge on Fridays, for example if we choose one for today, and then have the card completed a week from Sunday, so the due date would be 8/1 so then everyone would have a little over a week and 2 weekends to work on the post.  For the layouts we could use the maps for the previous month so (July for August) and post every other Sunday?

For the first challenge, we could choose any of the sketches on the first row of http://www.pagemaps.com/images/card%20pdfs/julysketches.pdf?  Then move to the next row for the following week.

For the layouts, we could create layouts using the July page maps (http://www.pagemaps.com/july10maps.htm)  and post the at least one 8/1, 8/15 and 8/29?

I think it would be fun to do some RAKs or exchanges. I know I have supplies that I wont use and would love to swap. We could do something through elfster if people are interested??

I think this will be lots of fun!

  • I'd love to join in the challenge!! I too get stuck doing the same layouts & lately have been wanting to change it up more.

I do cards too but I am focused on our "current life" scrapbook - need to catch up as I am at May - & also doing our dating/ engagement scrapbook - at the week b4 he proposed.

      count me in :)

  • there are TONS of scrapbooking challenge blogs out there covering ALL kinds of themes, techniques or sketches,

most offer prizes you can win.... some are based on talent, some a random draw

ill link a few up tomorrow when i have a brain. im just up now with a teething baby

  • You guys are coming up with great ideas. I post over at Oscraps and there are always a lot of fun different challenges going on.

I also love to browse through galleries of different styled scrappers and scrap lift a LO of theirs that I like.

Another good boost of inspiration is when I scroll through my digital kits- when I tag my kits I love seeing all of the pieces of kits and sometimes I'll do a random search in ACDSee just to see what pops up. If I see something that catches my eye, I try to build a LO around that.

  • I would love to be a part of the challenges. I am always looking for creative ideas for our scrapbooks. Is there going to be a certain place where we share these or are we just going to post on this page?
  • it is really!
