infected earring hole - advice?

i got my ears pierced in 1995 and then got my 2nd holes in 2003. My 1st earring holes rarely (if ever) bother me...however, within the past year (or longer?) my 2nd holes get infected every time i put earrings in them so i dont wear earrings in my 2nd holes that often.

every now and again I push an earring thru to make sure the holes dont close - last night i did so with my semi-expensive pearl earrings (with real gold posts) that i'd been wearing all day in my 1st holes - and this morning sure enough the holes are infected again........

every time they get infected i put rubbing alcohol on a q-tip and rub it on the holes about 2x/day and it gets better in about 2 days .... but i want to wear earrings in my 2nd holes more often..

anyone have any advice besides the rubbing alcohol?? i've even put neosporin on the posts and then put them in and it still gets infected.

You might be allergic to the metals.  I can only wear certain types of real gold, and sterling silver.  If I were cheap earrings, then my ears get infected too-its an allergic reaction.
  • Keep earrings in them most of the time.  I agree with PP and your idea about keeping a nicer metal in them (preferably gold).  Also clean the earrings every time you take them out in the evenings or before you put them in in the morning.  I used alcohol swabs for this and also clean my holes at the same time.  I have a hard time with my second holes as well (just like you my first holes don't give me a problem at all).  If I keep something in them all day every day it helps a lot.

  • Yeah I agree about keeping them in. If you dont have problems with your first holes, I doubt you are allergic to the metals.

Just keep them in (it will probably be uncomfortable) but make sure you clean them daily. I always cleaned mine with hydrogen peroxide.

  • As a multiply-pierced chica, I have LOTS of experience here. Alcohol is OK to use when you have an active infection but not good for everyday use. Peroxide is OK to clean an infected ear, but NOT to clean your earrings!! It will actually eat away the finish on the earring and exposing the bare metal, which you can have a reaction to, even if you're not allergic. To avoid all of this, my routine is:

-wear 'good' earrings, i.e. gold or sterling silver, especially when ears are irritated

-take a break-if they are really irritating me, I'll skip a day, but I try not to skip multiple days entirely because then my ears get even more irritated if I have to 'push' the earring through after a couple of days

-for costume jewelry or plated jewelry, I throw them out if I've had a reaction more than a couple of times because it's likely the finish is wearing off

-NEOSPORIN!!! Not only will it act as a lubricant to help you get that earring in, it will do LOADS for clearing up the irritation! I keep a special tube in my jewelry box just for my earrings and I stick the clean earring into the nozzle to coat it in medicine, then I put a little on the back also.

     Hope that helps!!!
