Anyone know somewhere that's hiring...

in the Southlake area? Both my husband and I are looking for jobs in the Southlake/Grapevine/Keller area. Unfortunately, I lost my teaching job (my contract was not renewed) while I was pregnant with DS. We had completely packed up and moved from College Station so I could work at the job that I lost. Now we're stuck here because of our lease. DH and I have both been looking for jobs for months with no luck. I've applied to all the school districts in the area and have no received a single response. Normally I wouldn't post something like this on TheBump, but we're getting to the point of desperation now. I'm worried that we won't be able to provide for our 3-month old when I get my last paycheck next month. I have a degree in Education from Texas A&M and DH has 9 hours left in his History degree from A&M. Both of us have lots of previous work experience, but at this point, we'd take anything. Any help/suggestions/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Anyone know somewhere that's hiring...

  • Have you applied to Northwest ISD? I saw online that they had several teacher openings (not sure what grades you are certified for) But I thought I'd mention that since they also pay pretty well.

    HTH! GL!

  • That's where I was employed this past year. I can still apply for jobs in the district, but I feel like my chances of getting a job there are slim because I did not have my contract renewed with my school. There's still hope, though.

  • Oh sorry, girl :( I'm sure something will come up for you! What are you certified to teach? When I was first hired out of college, they told me I had the job only 5 days before school started! So you really never know!
  • Yeah, that's what happened to me last year as well. I got hired 3 days before school started and we had to move 3.5 hours from home. I'm certified EC-4. I'm thinking maybe I'll get my 4-8 certification soon to increase my job options. I'm really hoping something comes up soon!

  • what grades are you certified?

You may have to look at something out of the area. I know Garland, Dallas and Arlington are hiring. I know that'll be a drive, but better to drive far to a job than not have one I guess. If you are okay with Dallas or Garland inbox me, I have worked in both districts and may have a few recs.

  • Fort Worth ISD had a hiring freeze til the beginning of this month, so they're behind other districts on filling vacancies.  I know it's a drive from the Southlake area for some of the schools, but it's better than nothing.  You may want to consider going north into Denton, too.  It's not a bad commute up that way either.  In the meantime, if you can get on as a substitute in districts, that could help if a job doesn't happen as a backup plan.  Birdville ISD is currently hiring for their certified sub list now.

  • I would try substitute teaching.  You can get hired on at several districts and hopefully pay the bills.  I have a friend who has her masters in education and still hasn't found a teaching job in the area so that's what she does.  She works at BISD, Grapevine, HEBISD, and KISD.  Another alternative to make some quick cash is private tutoring.  I have another friend that does this through one of the private tutoring companies in the area I think it's like kumon or Sylvan.  Another idea is to put out an ad at all the local colleges and high schools offering to tutor kids for a fee.  Hope that helps :)
