Well that was bracing.

We just got back from a day trip to the coast. Sean screamed all the way there and back -- screamed himself hoarse for an hour and a half each way. He sort of decided about 2 weeks ago that he didn't like the car, but I had no clue he had that kind of screaming stamina.

Did anyone else's baby decide they didn't like the car all of a sudden? He's good for about 10-15min and then just loses it. I'm hoping it's a phase. Somebody please tell me it's a phase, because we have a 10 hour road trip to SF coming up this Thanksgiving.

  • Oh man. I'm sorry. We've found that timing longer drives with naptime/bedtime works out well, but Will hasn't ever had that sort of intense hatred for the car.

  • Yes, with Bugalug from about 3 months to 8 months. Same thing -- okay for 10 minutes or so, then absolutely furious. Once she was eating solids I could stop and give her a little bit to eat in the seat and that would usually calm her down. Having a mirror so she could see me helped. For long car rides something obnoxiously electronic with flashing lights and music was a good distraction.

Damn. Was hoping it was a shorter phase than that.

  • It might be. At the time I was living with my parents so she was only in the car for short trips maybe once a week and rarely for the long roadtrip.

  • Ian's gone through phases like this, including a six hour ride to Vermont at Thanksgiving where I nearly had a nervous breakdown listening to him.  A mirror, and toys that hang down from the carseat handle, help.
  • alison likes the car most of the time, but she hates waiting at red lights so getting home in rush hour traffic, as fun as that is, can be worse if she is moody.

  • Rock-a-bye Baby- Bob Marley renditions saved my sanity during that phase.   Lila would freak out in the carseat, but if i put that on she would settle within a minute.   We used to drive to and from the cottage with that on for almost 3 hours each way but it was SO worth it.

  • Miles has always liked the car, though in the early months, he would freak out if we were not in motion.  Traffic lights were the worst.  Lately he's been pretty good in the car, though last night we drove home from Long Island and he screamed for about an hour of the 1 1/2 hr trip.

I've had most car success when timing it to coincide with a nap or bedtime.

  • Mags hated the car for a while. Usually one of us would have to sit back there with her.

  • Man, my parents had it easy. I would just fall asleep in the car. If I wouldn't go to sleep, they'd just toss me in the carseat, drive around the block a few times, and I'd be out. I'm still like that sometimes.

That's how Ethan is. The car is his kryptonite. I'm crossing my fingers it still works when we drive to Nashville next month.

  • my poor parents listened to me scream my head off while in the car longer than 10-15 minutes . . . turned out I get very motion sick, which was much more obvious when I got older and started throwing up in the car. : )  maybe try to do stuff to help with baby nausea just in case that is poor Sean's issue?

  • Gwen doesn't scream every time she's in the car... but she certainly doesn't love it, and the more stops you make, the angrier she gets.

We did this. Just had a 6.5 hour drive up to Cape Cod, and then back. We timed it so that I did bedtime routine, then put her down in the car instead of in her crib. She woke three times each way, but I just hopped in back and gave her some bottle, and she fell back asleep. It went better then we even hoped for. Of course, we were exhausted afterward, but it was worth it to not be screamed at for 6 hours!

  • Ryker hates short trips and stopping. he will scream. That kind of scream where they choke on their spit and then stop screaming because that jars them enough to forget they were screaming, but then like 2 minutes later they remember again. yeah.

But he did really well on the highway on our 6 hourn drive. It lulled him to sleep. He just woke a couple of times to nurse, except one time each way he obviously wanted someone back there with him and he calmed down.

  • I remember that phase, but I have no recollection of how long it was.  I agree with the suggestions to time it along with naps/bedtime.  We did a trip to SC and back (about 17 hrs each way) that way.  Sucks for you to drive through the night, but totally worth it.

I remember one trip to J's parents that should have taken about an hr and fifteen minutes, but ended up over 3 hours of screaming the entire way.  I started with a stash of about a dozen pacifiers and would hand one back every time the screaming started again.

    I promise it gets better!
