Hawaii Ladies: Hawaiian "K" names?

Question for the Hawaiian ladies (or anyone who has a suggestion!)...we are trying to figure out a name for our LO (just in case baby is a girl!).  We want the middle name to begin with a K and we would like it to be a Hawaiian name.  I have looked online, but I am just not sure & thought personal opinions are always best anyway.

2nd question...my grandmother's name was Jewel, but I could only find the hawaiian word for "jewelry" and it was quite long.  Does anyone know another translation? or the actual translation for Jewel, not jewelry?

 Thanks so much!!

  • Not sure if you saw this site, but there's a ton of Hawaiian names and their translations:

  • The only "K" girl names I remember from school were Kehau, Kanani, and Kapua (and they were all very nice). During my Hawaiian class, the teacher decided that in the spirit of things, he would give everyone a Hawaiian name to used. I  was named Kekai (for the sea - is what he told me)

I also found this name translator .. http://hawaiiannames.hisurf.com/ and the translations for Jewel = MeaMakamae or Jewell = Leweli. Not sure on the accuracy of the translations.

Good luck and can't wait to hear what name you decide on.

  • I like your idea of using a name that has meaning to you. Jewel or gem (according to wehewehe.org) is "pohaku makamae." That literally translates into precious stone. Check out this list: http://www.localkinehawaii.com/hawaiiannames.html. Lots of great names with their meanings.
  • Thank you all so much!! Lots of good ideas & suggestions...off to check out some of the websites you suggested!!!

  • I'm partial to Kailani because that's Bella's middle name. It means the sea and the sky... or at least that's what the translation said :) I personally prefer Hawaiian girl names that end in "lani" because I think it sounds so beautiful. My niece is 1/2 hawaiian and her middle name is Noelani.

I also liked Kanani. It was one of our yoga teachers in Hawaii that I adored... it was the second runner up.

Can't wait to hear what you decide!

  • My sons name is Kai, so I LOVE MrsZiz name..Kailani.  I love it!  But since you were married in Kailua, why not that? That way it is a special name.
