Re: Relocating to NY (Albany or Poughkeepsie)
Hello!
What would you like to know about Albany?
1. How are these two cities alike and different.
2. Which neighborhoods are bad/good.
3. Whats the cost of living? In South Florida to live comfortably is about 120K a year. (2 people income)
4. Any new neighborhoods (just constructed). We are looking for a home.
Well Poughkeepsie is closer to NYC so the cost of living is slightly higher but salaries generally tend to be slightly higher as well. Poughkeepsie is also a smaller city.
It's kind of hard to answer the cost of living question. It really depends on your lifestyle, how you want to live, and what you consider "comfortable".
Depending on whether you want to commute, that would extend your possibilities. The Albany area is very easily commutable and you would have no problem finding nice communities to live in. I'm pretty sure many would say the same about Poughkeepsie.
Not sure if you have kids, but school districts might be a factor? There are some great school districts in the Albany area.
It can be tough to find land to build on in the more popular areas of albany, but I'm sure you could check out builders websites and see what they have.
Realtyusa.com is a good site for Albany homes for sale - you an search by just about any criteria, so maybe put in a good school district and the number of bedrooms and your price range and you'd get a good idea of what you can get.
Also timesunion.com (the area's big newspaper) has resources and real estate listings.
I am from LI and I feel like LI is not affordable for us, but albany is a lot cheaper. We got our house for prob 1/2 the price of the same thing on Long Island. But that being said, salaries are lower. I think it is relative for the most part.
I am not familiar with poughkeepsie though.

I love the Albany area. I did live in Albany for 4 years and while it was great DH and I chose a smaller town with a great school district about 15 min away. That is the great thing about the Albany area, we have great smaller towns with great schools if you don't want to live in Albany.
We are 2.5 hours from NYC via train. We have great theaters in Albany and Schenectady that often get Off Broadway shows, big concerts, great restaurants. Lots of places to go apple picking in the fall, wonderful area farmers markets that are outside from May-Oct and then they are inside for the rest of the year.
I can't tell you if you'll live comfortable making what you do because I don't know what you like to buy. DH and I could live VERY comfortable on that salary
