DH and I are thinking about getting the dvd set. Has anyone used P90X or known anyone who has? Thanks!
Re: Has anyone tried P90X?
I have it, and I did it last year before our trip to Hawaii. It is really good in terms of increasing your strength and endurance, but be warned: I GAINED weight on it. I'm not very big to begin with, but I decided that if I was going to do it, I was going to do it seriously. So HH and I followed the meal plan to a T, along with doing the workouts religiously (he was just following the meal plan as he's an athlete anyway so he didn't have time to do the videos along with his regular workouts). He ended up losing a bit of weight because the meals were healthier than what we normally eat, but I gained - it was definitely a combination of muscle mass which weighs more than fat, but also that I was not accustomed to eating as much as what the meal plan calls for. I felt like I did nothing BUT eat for three months
Anyway, long story short, my experience was that I felt stronger after doing it, but didn't get the awesome "before" and "after" shots that are all over the advertisements for it
Now with that said, I have a guy friend who did it. He went from being a fat guy (I'm not being mean - he says it himself, there is no other word - he was obese. I'm talking big ol' man boobs). And now he is RIPPED. He chronicled his experience with P90X on his facebook, including before, during and after shots. If there was ever an advertisement for the program, it is him. He now weighs 162 lbs!!! And he has muscles!! Insanity.
So I think that the people who are going to see big results are people who are bigger to begin with, and if you're naturally on the small side don't follow the menu plan, haha!!
DH has been talking about it for a while (since before the wedding). We haven't attempted, but we've both gained weight since the wedding. I don't know if I'd follow the meal plan. I haven't looked at it, but I might consider weight watchers at the same time.
Keep us updated if you do it.
What is the meal plan like? Another dvd that is worth a shot is Jillian Michael's 30 day shred.
Its 15 dollars and has 3 workouts that you can progress through. Its a little less hard core I'm guessing
The meal plan is really really tasty food, lots of fish, heavy on the protein
Whole grains, veggies...it's basically just really good, clean eating. We followed it and not once did I feel deprived of anything - the balance also makes it so that you don't CRAVE anything, because you're getting everything that your body needs. I find with some diets, all I want to do is eat some damn bread! Or a potato! Because you're missing some vital nutrient. And it's not anything crazy that you can't find at your standard grocery store, which means you're not on some city-wide hunt to find some crazy ingredient that seems to be in everything.
The only thing that I have to say negatively about it is that if you're not used to eating constantly, and HUGE meals at that (umm...6 egg white omelet is just NOT an easy thing to finish off!!) then you might be like me, and gain weight...haha
Whoa! Do they tell you that you have to eat all of that?! I can't even imagine eating that much on a regular basis.
The P90X "look" kind of freaks me (and Matt) out. Different kinds of activity build different-shaped muscles, and I prefer the long 'n lean look of Pilates, etc., at least for myself. I haven't worked out in two weeks, though. It's terrible.
