Fav beach on Cape Cod??

DH and I are taking DS and the in-laws to Cape Cod this weekend. We are camping mid-cape and want to spend at least one full day at a beach and one day at a lighthouse. Any favorites that you're willing to share? DS is 3 so I am hoping for a beach that is less rocky (even though rocky beaches are often beautiful). I also want to find a lighthouse that is open to the public, which one is best for exploring?

Thanks for any advice you can offer.

Re: Fav beach on Cape Cod??

  • Sadly, I've never been to a beach on the Cape! Sorry, I can't be much help!
  • My favorite beach is Ridgevale Beach in Chatham.  It's great for kids b/c it has the ocean then smaller pools for kids.
  • I grew up on Ridgevale Beach! We go to Hardings which is right down the road now.
  • Hardings looks awesome!! Will there be trouble getting a parking space on a Saturday?? Is it super super busy?? Also is the Chatham light worth going to? You have no idea how thrilled I am to ask a "local" -- thanks so much for responding!

We'll be moving to Mass as soon as our house sells, so I'm excited to get there and see the Cape, etc. We'll be in Metro West but the ocean will be so close, I can't imagine getting down there at least once a year.

  • There are 2 parking lots at Hardings and we've never had a problem getting a spot on the weekend. Ridgevale you usually need to get there by 10am since the lot is smaller.

Chatham Light is nice, there are no lifegaurds at that beach and they generally discourage swimming because of the bad currents. There are usually a couple of drownings every year there. You also have to park and take a shuttle to that beach. if you just want to see the light house it's worth an after dinner drive. You can park for a few minutes and enjoy the scenery.

I live in Boston now but I grew up in Metro West and spent my summers down the Cape in Harwich/Chatham.

  • I also noticed you have a 3 year old (saw your ticker). There is a band concert every Friday night in Chatham during the summer. It's really fun for kids and it's free. We went every friday night and I have the best memories from it!
  • Thanks so much for all the info. I think we're going to try Hardings. Now I just hope the weather cooperates.

Mind if I ask where in Metro West? We're looking at Leominster and Townsend, in that area.

  • Cahoun Hallow Beach, in Wellfleet... My favorite, But Chatham is great also
  • Not at all . . . . Framingham. My childhood home is actually for sale right now : ( My parents are moving to the Cape full time.
  • Nauset Light Beach or Coast Guard Beach in Eatham if you want the Ocean side

Thumpertown Beach in Eastham if you want the Bay side

  • I am sure that you already went but Mayflower Beach in Dennis is beautiful and the tide goes out sooo far. My 6 year old loves it
