I'm trying to get some ideas for economical cars, so...
what do you drive?
year?
MPG?
Re: poll: economical cars
05 Honda Civic EX coupe (special edition)
It gets about 30 mpg city and 36 highway and I love it. It's very sporty but still large enough to fit my pug and chi 9with his car seat) in the back seat and still have room. And the trunk is large.
ditto sunshine. I drive a 2008 prius and have an average lifetime mpg of 48. I have to use the A/C a lot because I live in GA and the '08 model doesn't have the solar panel on the roof like the '10 does.
My husband has an x-terra and I easily fit as much stuff in the prius as he does in his car. The backseat can also fold down flat if you have to put something long in (like skis, 2x4's etc. lol). I rave about this car all.the.time. and it was worth every penny, especially if you drive a lot (my H commutes to Atlanta so he drives my car and I use his around town).
We have a 2006 Scion xB (the older toaster-style one)... I love it...
I get well over 30 MPG, and the vast vast majority of my driving is in-city (H takes it on the freeway to work 2x a week, and that's about all the freeway driving we do)...
The car is big enough to put four adults in very very comfortably (FIL is 6'5" and sits in the back very happily), it's fantastic if you have to haul stuff (it is a small car, though - - so it's passengers or cargo, not both).
We have two little kids, so we have two big big carseats and the remaining cargo area is sufficient for us to do our occasional big Costco runs without any problems.
H and I share a car, so we need one that fulfills both of us, and this does the job nicely.
...one thing we do though, that we agreed to before we went down to one car, is rent if we need to... we follow the 90/10 rule, and own a car that works for us 90 percent of the time... the rest of the time, we rent..
For example, we're planning a trip to go buy produce in the farming communities in our state (stuff to freeze and can, cases and cases of stuff)- maybe 2-3 hours away in each direction. If we take the xB, we'll be able to buy a decent amount of produce, but if we rent a minivan, we'll be able to buy enough to make the trip really worth it.
I am the 99%.
2009 Jetta TDI. Mpg is great. I have a long, highway commute and this morning I got 51.2 mpg on my way to work. 45-52mpg is typical on the highway. Mid-30's is typical for stop & go, but I don't do much of that, so it's hard to say for sure. I know it's much higher than the EPA estimates for the car. I also noted that mpg is getting better the more the car gets broken in (which is typical with diesels).
My max trip mpg is 55.6. I'm sure I could've gotten more if I was trying.
what do you drive? Mini Cooper Clubman
year? 2010
MPG? 37
LOVE IT!

2003 toyota corolla
i know nothing about gas mileage.
i can usually get away with filling up my car every 1.5-2 weeks, and it's somewhere between $25-30 each time- and this is in HCOL NY, where gas prices are usually some of the highest in the country.
Apparently I drive the oldest car here...
what do you drive? a Saturn. SL200 (I THINK)
year? 2000
MPG? average 32. Sometimes better, sometimes worse, depends on how I am driving.Well, I also have a 1992 Honda Civic 2dr hatchback. It gets 40-45 mpg. Though, somehow I don't think op is in the market for an 18 year old car
2006 Honda Civic
Typically get 40 mpg on highway trips. City driving I will get between 30-35, everyone once in awhile it will drop to 29, but that is rare.
I love my car and would recommend it!
Well, actually...if it won't break down on the side of the road and gets good gas mileage, I don't care, lol. I'm soon to be commuting a lot and that 18 yr old car beats the heck out my 2001 Jeep's MPG!!
2010 Ford Fusion 30-37 MPG
2011 Ford Fiesta 38-48 MPG
They are doing awesome stuff with their trucks too. Ford has really taken a very impressive turn over the past handful of years. I'm proud to drive FORD!
I'm jealous of your Fiesta! We tried holding out for one, but needed a car before they became available. I still don't see them at the dealer yet. How do you like it?
