So H's friend's gf is due September 2nd, and he asked for my help planning a surprise baby shower for her. Obviously I said yes! But...now I'm lost.
They're having a boy, and instead of a typical baseball/cars/blue theme, I was thinking of going with a monkey theme. I found this adorable example: http://www.hostessblog.com/2009/07/mod-monkey-baby-shower-part-1/
I'm not crazy about the Ms and Bs, but I like the colors and decor for the most part. I could easily recreate the table cloth/plate/napkin combo (I'm a big fan of all the colors), but don't want to spend $50 on a sock monkey from Etsy, so I'm wondering cute but cheap ways to incorporate the theme.
My ideas thus far:
I could create a "monkey mobile" - cut out pictures of monkeys and either hang them from the ceiling or put them on string on embroidery rings and hang them over the table
Runts and/or bananas on the table
That's pretty much it! The other problem is that it's NEXT SUNDAY (thanks a lot, H's friend, for planning ahead) - I've already sent Evites, but that's about it.
CN: I'm hosting a surprise monkey-themed baby shower. Any ideas for decor, food or favors on a budget?
Re: Help planning baby shower
1) love love LOVE the idea! too cute!
2) sock monkeys are super easy to make. My grandma used to sit down and make them for us in a few minutes. I had a whole army of sock monkeys growing up lol. http://hubpages.com/hub/howtomakeasockmonkey
3) For dessert what about something like this http://www.veggiebelly.com/2009/08/chocolate-banana-cupcakes.html decorated something like this http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_OvjfLn5aZuo/Svmu9yMJKOI/AAAAAAAAAlo/9kbLXEC36tY/s1600-h/post_11.09.09_cupcake.jpg or this, depending on time and talent http://lets-bake-today.blogspot.com/2009/06/banana-cupcakes-marzipan.html
If you wanted to do napkin rings or something, I wouldn't even bother with monograms, just use patterned scrapbook paper that complements the sock monkeys and incorporates the colors of the tablecloths/napkins. I like the centerpieces that is a banana leaf in a solid color funky vase with a sock monkey by it. Too cute!
yeah! super cute!!! love the idea!

I think your idea of super easy and my idea of super easy may be a bit different - there's no way I'd be able to make a decent looking one, unless I worked at it for a long time. It looks like Toys R Us might have them (http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=4286331&CAWELAID=545576025) OR this local store, that has different colors: http://www.zozoforkids.com/item.php?item_id=899&page=2&category_id=58 - maybe I could get two of them in some kind of blue print and put them on the table?
And those banana cookies look crazy good! Maybe I'll make them without decorating so I can put them in little bags as favors? Maybe with some monkey stickers or something?
OMG, I LOVE this! The circle banner looks pretty easy to do - and I'm trying to figure out if I have enough space to do the onesies because GODDAMN that is cute!
You girls rock! I'm feeling pretty overwhelmed by the whole thing, but I'm happy I brought it here.

I know! I want a fun project to work on. And I'm soooo partial to the original sock monkeys at target instead of the other ones. Yeah, the decorations on those cookies look ridic, but I think using them as favors with a cute monkey sticker (have they chosen the baby's name?) could be super cute. Tie the baggies shut with a brown ribbon and put a sticker on it?
I kinda think the banner and the onesies are a must - that is about the cutest idea EVER!
Um, you both are MORE THAN WELCOME to make this your fun project! I'm in way over my head.
Very slight change in theme - I was at Target at the Dollar Spot (a.k.a. "Heaven") yesterday and they had adorable monkey, giraffe, lion and panda baby shirts, socks, footies, pacy holders, frames and hangers. I just HAD to get them all! So, I've gone from a monkey theme to a more jungle theme. I'm thinking I'll use all the shirts, socks, footies, etc. as decoration on a "clothes line" and they can just take them when they leave! I also got two adorable stuffed pandas for table decor, and I'm thinking I'll put them with bamboo plants?
I also got the plain white onesies, so decorating them will definitely be happening!
