Homeowners Insurance Question

So we have full "premium" homeowners insurance but that does not include earthquake insurance (no policy seems to have it included).  The cost to have earthquake insurance is $500 per year.  This may be a stupid question, but would you get it?  Remember, we live in CA and while earthquakes are common, the type of earthquake that would level my home is really rare.

P.S.  If this seems like a no-brainer, forgive me.  I have a pregnant brain and have had trouble making decisions on things like this lately.

Re: Homeowners Insurance Question

  • I can only answer this from the perspective of a Midwestern-er who doesn't live in a location that has earthquakes.  :)  What would earthquake insurance cover that traditional homeowner's insurance wouldn't?? Can they really exclude/not cover property damage due to earthquakes if you don't have that coverage specifically??

I guess I personally would talk to your agent about your particular policy. If it covers damage due to the "act of God" type situations that are out of your control, it would seem like overkill and be unnecessary to me to add the additional clause for earthquake damage.  However, if they can exclude damage to your property caused by an earthquake unless you have it, it seems like a good idea to have  - if that makes sense.

  • I agree. You need to figure out what type of coverage you would have and wouldn't have with it. Even after buying earthquake insurance, there might still be some exclusions. I say call your insurance agent.
  • Agree with all the pp!
  • Our homeowners insurance does not cover any earthquake related damage to our home or belongings.  Adding the earthquake insurance covers the house and belongings from any damage caused by an earthquake.

  • I think it would be worth it--just because the typical earthquake wouldn't level your house doesn't mean you won't have damage to the foundation, walls, pipes, or windows.

  • I lived in SoCal for 6 years.  Actually, 500 a year is cheaper than it was when I was there...they wanted 900 back in 1998.  It's not just the house demolishing kind of damage that you have to worry about.  An earthquake not strong enough to level a house can still put serious cracks in your foundation, break off fireplaces, crack tile floors, fracture pipes, knock down porches, destroy pools, and damage tile roofs.  Those things were the kind of damage that people in LA had after the last big one...and they can cost a mint to fix!

Got your message and replied back but internet explorer crashed so not sure if it went through.

Thanks for the advice to all... we are going to go ahead and get the earthquake insurance.
