Paragard and birth defects/miscarriage?

First time caller here; I'm thinking about getting an IUD (since I'm not allowed to take estrogen due to migraines and it's so easy to mess up progesterone-only, plus I'm prone to moodswings) and I've heard overall positive feedback about Paragard, but the risk of birth defects if you get pregnant while using it nags at me. (Yes, I know only 1% of women get pregnant on it but I'm one of those people who beats the odds) I've seen warnings but can't seem to figure out what kind of birth defects they are talking about. They also say that if you remove it while pregnant, it can cause miscarriage, which is not appealing either. Has anyone had an experience with this?

Re: Paragard and birth defects/miscarriage?

  • There are drawbacks to all forms of BC.  I think the risks with Paragard are pretty low.
  • There are at least 4 paragard babies on the 12-24 month or 2+ board. All are healthy, but that seems like an unusually high number for a birth control form that isn't something someone has to remember.

Have you considered Mirena? That is what I am currently using. My OB/Gyn didn't offer Paragard to me as an option and when I asked why, she also sited a large number of paragard babies she had delivered. She did say all were healthy/without defects but she had personal doubts as to its effectiveness percentages.

  • I dont know anything about paragard, I had the mirena IUD for 5 years and no pregnancy. I got it removed this past Feb and am pregnant with my 2nd child now (my first was before the IUD). I didnt have any problems with my IUD and the effectiveness was still 99.9% when used alone (at least when I had it). I know the "risks" if I was to get pregnant with it was eptopic pregnancy and it would have to be removed (if it were to happen) or it would kill me and the baby. Like the pp said about 4 paragard babies on the boards?! that is a very high number for such a "highly effective" form of birth control

    Dang.

Well, I have a Paragard. Its been in for over 3 years and I have not had any issues. Although, I only started testing its effectiveness in the last 15 months.
