IUD

Has anyone used or currently using an IUD? I'm thinking about getting one, but after reading some of the info online I'm a little scared. It seems kind of painful and I'm afraid that it just might fall out. If you have one, do you like it?

Re: IUD

  • I've had the Paragard for two years and it's a love hate relationship.

I get really bad cramps most months and my period is very very heavy for at least one of the 5 days.

Insertion was a breeze though and I've never had kids.

On a whole though, I love it and will certainly get another on in 8 yrs (if dh doesn't get snipped by then).

  • I had the Mirena for about 3 years .... spotted non-stop for about the first 3-4 months, then quit having periods altogether.  I had it taken out when I started gaining weight rapidly and thought maybe the progesterone was doing it .... but later found out it was a failing thyroid, so I have no complaints about it.

It was was nice not having periods.  Smile

  • I am thinking about gettine Mirena after this Baby. My Friend had it the 2nd time done now and she loves it. No periods. The only thing she said is that when you had no children yet it hurts to get in. Also, they are around 250$, you might have to see if your insurance covers it.
  • I have an IUD in right now. Its the Mirena one. I got it 6 weeks after my son was born. It hurt a little getting it in but nothing compared to just having a baby. The first few months I had spotting on and off and it was annoying because it was so random and I was never prepared. Then it all together stopped. I havent had a period in 10 months and I love it. I have the Mirena IUD with hormones and I sometimes blame my moody hormones on that but I dont know if it is really the IUD or just me being moody. I definetely can tell when my time of month would be every month. I get cramps and very rarely still some spotting. But it is very light and hardly noticeable. This has been my only form of birth control in over a year and no babies! So its working for me. Sometimes my husband can say he feels it or feels the little strings that are attached to it. But it has never hurt him. He can just feel it somewhere in there. While you have it in you are supposed to keep a "tab" on it and make sure you can still feel the strings in there so you know its still there. I dont think it will fall out, but you will always be able to check and see if it does. I have read the horror stories on it as well but the no period thing was way too enticing and I took the chance. I have had no problems with it. I would say do it. Its worth the money. And... NO CONDOMS!
  • I've had the Paragard for over 5 years and we love it. No hormones and the freedom of not having to worry about a barrier. Unless we decide to have a baby before then, I'll be getting another one put in when the 10 years is up on this one.
  • I had Mirena inserted at the beginning of March.  I'm not going to lie, it was the most painful thing I've ever felt (I don't tolerate pain at all though).  I was pretty crampy that day and the day after, but warm packs helped a lot.  For a couple months I would cramp on and off randomly for short periods of time, but I get them much less frequently now.  I was on a progesterone only pill before this, so I wasn't getting my periods in the first place.  Had a little spotting occasionally the first couple months, but nothing since.  My BC options are fairly limited since estrogen makes my migraines wayyyyyyy worse and happen more often.  5 years of not worrying about taking pills, using condoms, and being one of the most effective choices of BC out there... heck yes!
  • I had the Mirena IUD for 5 years after having my daughter when I was 19. It was great. There was some cramping when it was put in but after awhile no periods. I had it removed in Feb (5 years were up) and now I am pregnant. I used the IUD as my option because I didnt want anymore children until I was married. I used regular birth control after that.

I have Mirena, I had no problems with it even though I haven't had a child, and it wasn't too bad to put in. Honestly, she said to expect a sharp feeling from the cervical clamp and then pain, but when she put it in, I thought it was the clamp. It wasn't great, but it didn't even hurt as much as one of my cartilage ear piercings. They're great if you don't need the extra hormones, and the Mirena releases a few that help with cramps.
  • I have the Copper IUD Paraguard, have had it for almost 2 months now, and I am SO happy I got it. I was on BC for 3 years, and switched for weight loss difficulty reasons, doctor recommended the Copper one because of no hormones. I won't lie, the insertion HURT. I have never had children, so they warned me it would be a little painful. I would suggest taking a couple of ibuprofen 30 min. before. (I didn't, but I was told I could). The pain is basically like your worst cramps for a whole minute, while they're inserting it. My uterus spasmed right after, haha, didn't like my poor little IUD, so I was in extreme pain for about 30 minutes. The nurses gave me some strong pain meds, and then the pain eased away, I was even able to drive home shortly after. I bled for about 5 days solid, but I used a tampon and changed it every 4 hours or so, then I went right back to normal! I had my first period about 2 1/2 - 3 weeks ago, it was a definitely longer than when I was on BC (lasted a week), and slightly heavier, but it wasn't too bad. The cramps can easily be dealt with with ibuprofen, I didn't take any though, however, just so I could see what it would be like throughout the entire week. I was also told that the first 3 period or so would be stronger/heavier because your body is adjusting to the IUD. So if that was the worst, it's not bad at all. :-) Every woman is different, however, but all in all, I would very much recommend getting an IUD. :-D
  • I currently have mirena, I got it in about a year ago. Before I got it in I had the WORST monthly cycle ever (about 10 days long, ridiculously heavy [I'm talking supers being changed out every hour at least]) and after spotting for about 3 weeks straight after getting it in, and then having a shorter period the first few months, I now only spot MAYBE for a day every month and that's it. It's pretty heavenly, not going to lie, haha.

Getting it put in...was pretty awful. However, mine was circumstancial. If you have a c-section then they have to do an ultrasound in order to put it in. Well I had problems with my c-section in that my incision had broke open about halfway, and now it's EXTREMELY sensitive and pushing on it hurts...well they have to push pretty much RIGHT on your incision in order to see where they need to see on the inside. So awful. Seemed like it lasted an eternity (although it was really only about 15 minutes). However, besides that, just a little pinching and a little bleeding and that was all. lots of cramping for the next day or so, and like I said with the spotting/light flow for a couple weeks after, but after that, fantastic.
