So HH and I have decided....

to move somewhere that's not so god forsaken hot in the summer!!  112 degrees with the heat index yesterday!  Yuck!  How's northern virginia or  pennsylvania or maryland??  We can't move up north because then it's WAY too cold in the winter.  I can't believe at one time I actually considered moving to Florida!!

Re: So HH and I have decided....

  • I was in FL for almost 2 years. I hated it. We were in Miami. Not sure how the rest of the state is. DH grew up there, and also hates it.
  • are ya'll seriously considering moving?

I'm in Northern Virginia. Granted, it's been hot this month. It's been hot every where. BUT we love our home town. Absolutely love it. We're about 2 hours south of Washington DC and about an hour and a half north of Richmond. It's a fabulous location... very close to lots of historic civil war battlefields... and of course historic DC.

I could go on and on. We love it.

  • I guess not seriously considering it.  I don't think I'd be able to leave because my family's here.  But I'd really like to!  Plus, I'd like to be somewhere new too.

  • This summer has been crazy hot. I live in Houston, Tx and its 100 degrees regularly from June until September. Plus add in 90-100% humidity and it can be miserable. We hibernate in the summer down here, seriously. I take my dog for a walk around 7am on weekends and if I dont leave before 8 then we are both gasping by the time we get back from doing our 1.5 mile loop. I guess I am used to the heat/humidity since I grew up here but there is no way I could deal with crazy northern winters. I'm a big baby when it comes to being cold.

This.  I b!tch about it being so hot and humid here, but I would MUCH rather deal with the heat than the cold.  I hate being cold.  We went to Illinois for Christmas one year and I thought I was going to die..... literally.

This winter was completely wretched here. I spent a lot of time googling addiction treatment centers in the Caribbean and sending the links to Matt with captions like "You could work here! I would freelance index from home."

  • I'm in the Dallas area and it was 103 and RAINING when i left work at 3.  Ugh.  I constantly consider moving to Colorado.  We have family cabins there and in Wyoming so I've spent parts of the winter in both but the Summers are absolutely AMAZING.  I don't think we'll ever move out of Texas because our families are here but a girl can dream, can't she?

Lucky me! Can't wait for the winter... I'll be begging for FL by the time Jan rolls around!

  • I'm from northern virginia- I LOVE it there. We moved about 2 hours south for DH's job, but we will be moving back when we can :)

I bet you're super close to me!

  • Every winter I say, I can't wait for summer!!  And then when July and August roll around, I'm like, damn, it's too hot!

  • Its been in the high 90's here in WV which is actually pretty hot for around here. We're usually in the high 80's low 90's. During the winter it can get down in the teens but its usually in the 30-40 degree range. I love it here though, especially during the fall when all the leaves have changed and the mountains are red, yellow, and orange!

I forgot you were in Illinois!!  Chicago area, right?  And where we were was even further South than that!  We were in this itty bitty town... Nokomis.  Adam has a bunch of family there.

  • The funny thing is, I would be okay with moving away from family (especially his!). I just really love the area. It's home. There's something about french fries on sandwiches and salads and Steelers jerseys being appropriate attire for any and all occasions that I love. I don't think I would be able to stand moving away from the PA woods for good, either, much though I love the western states, clear air, and conifers.
  • French fries on sandwiches sounds awesome!  I may have to try that!  I already do the chips on sandwiches, so fries on sandwiches could be even better!!  Especially with Checkers fries!  Damnit... now I want Checkers.

    Don't forget the coleslaw. http://www.primantibrothers.com/

Darn it. Now I'm starving, want Primanti's, and am still broke.

  • Yuck.... I'll pass on the coleslaw.  Primanti's was on the Food Channel or something, right???  I know that name.

  • MrsMaldo - are you in Charlottesville? Is your HH Army?  That is on our list of places that we wouldn't mind going next.

Becky - We've been in Northern VA (Alexandria/Arlington) for 2.5yrs and hate it, we can't wait to leave and were completely bummed when HH got extended here a year, now we have to stay until the end of 2012.  It seems like people either like it or hate it, there's not much of an in between.

    • Weather: It has regularly been in the high 90's, low 100's with 90+% humidity and it stays that way almost all day (it rarely gets below 80* overnight & still humid).  You can't do anything outside without having heat stroke.  Winter is biting cold and usually without much snow (but any snow freaks people out here), this winter we got hit with two big snow storms and it literally shut the city down.
    • Traffic is horrendous - any time of day (except 2am-4am), any day of the week.  I live just under 13mi from work and sometimes it takes me 1.5hr to get home.  Going anywhere south on I95 will take you hours because most people try to leave the city, especially on Fridays starting about 1pm and all weekend, then it sucks going back north because of people coming back.
    • A$$holes - There's a high volume of rude people here but I don't know why.  I don't know if it's because so many people are packed into an older city that doesn't have the space or what.  There have been more times than I can count where you can go order food or check out at a store and the employee doesn't look at you, acknowledge you or say one word to you.  It also might be a communication/cultural issue because there's a huge mix of nationalites here.
    • DC is one of the top three murder capitals in the U.S.  There's a lot of gang activity and crime here.
    • Housing - it's not unusual to pay $2200 or more per month for an apt or small house, some can be over $3000/month.

I will say that it seems like when you go south to about Fredericksburg things seem to get a lot better.  It becomes more of a "small town/country" feel and it makes a huge difference in all of the things I mentioned.  You can be close enough to DC without actually living in it but will still deal with traffic to get here.  There's a lot to do in DC and it has a lot of history (obviously).  If you're not into museums, art, history, etc. and the only thing you want to see are the monuments ... there are only so many times you can do that and trust me, you will do it every time you have out of town guests.

If the Army told HH we were leaving tomorrow, I'd start packing immediately!  Come on end of 2012!!

  • Thanks for the info!! :)  Sounds like you have similar weather to us too.

Hubby and I are both from Western PA, but are living in Richmond now....would give anything to move back to PA - exactly for the reasons you stated...OMG what I wouldn't give for a steak salad with french fries on top!  I know we'll end up back up there at some point, but him finding a teaching job is next to impossible, so we're gonna wait it out awhile :-)  So, enjoy it for me, will you?  Oh, and I have to tell you, i was in Orlando last week and had on my  "Got Six?" shirt and was amazed at how many people commented on it......one benefit to being a Steeler fan not living in Western PA is that people seem to have even more pride in being Steeler fans :-) and a Quaker Steak and Lube just opened up a mile or so down the road, so I'm so excited to go watch some football there this fall...should be lots of terrible towels flyin!

  • I'm in Richmond and it's been hot as hell lately! While I was in Orlando last week, it was actually cooler there than here in Richmond - insane! When we got home on Friday it was 107, and my car said 109 on Saturday at 6:00 in the evening. I'm hoping the streak of hot weather has passed - it was only 88 today - now we just need some serious rain!

I loved summers growing up in western PA...pretty warm with usually a few hot days, but 95 was considered hot. But yes, those winters could get cold, but you just get used to it :-)

I would never, ever, ever, EVER want to live that close to DC! Alexandria is such a pit! My dad's family is from there and I'm thrilled I never have to be forced there again!!!!!

I went to school in Fredericksburg and it's a MUCH better area for sure!!!!!!!!
