Chicago/Ohio reccs...

Hey ladies! I am going to be off on vacation next week. DH and I are going to Chicago to spend time with his brother's family for 3 days, and then we are going to Lollapalooza for 3 days. On the way out to IL (from NY) we will be spending a day or so at Cedar Point in OH.

So I just wanted to check and see if anyone had any reccs for food/sites/must-do's in Cedar Point area or Chicago. Our time is pretty limited bc we have a fairly busy schedule already, but if there is something that is really awesome to do while we're out there, we will try to fit it in. TIA!!

I can't wait to get away!!

  • I don't have any recs, but I wanted to tell you to have fun! You are going to the amusement park Cedar Point, right? I've never been, but we talk about going all the time. It sounds like so much fun.

  • Yepp!! It will be our first time going to Cedar Point, but I've talked about it since I was probably 12 years old. Soooo excited!! I haven't been to any parks in a few years, so I hope I still like rollercoasters :)

  • The last time I was in Chicago was when I was six or seven years old, so take my advice with a grain of salt. But from my trip, I distincly remember three things:

    O'Hare Airport Sucks.

The Chicago Museum of Science & Industry is MIND-BLOWING! I have very, very vivid memories of the exhibits and it was 20 years ago. I'm sure it's just gotten better since then.

Sears Tower is really cool. I thought it was cooler than the Empire State Building.

    Second this!

I'll think of you as you drive through my city on your way to Cedar Point/Chicago.

  • I went to Cedar Pointe in June actually (my sister lives about an hour away).

Here are my tips. Get there early and go to the back of the park. The popular rides will have lines right away, but if you head back to Millenium Force you should be able to walk right on to a few rides. You will wait about 40 minutes for most rides (2 hrs for Top Speed Dragster) so take advantage of tiny lines when you can.

My favorite coaster was the Maverick, we rode it three times. Stay away from the Mantis. It gave us all awful headaches because your head smashes around the whole time. Not a single person in our group enjoyed that right. We only did the coasters, so I can't comment on the other rides. For dinner, we headed out of the park to the restaurant on the pier, Famous Dave's, which was nice because it was more reasonably priced and a bit less busy.

That's all I can think of now. Let me know if you have any other questions.

  • Cedar Point is fun -- I haven't been since I was 15 but it was a lot of fun.

Chicago - if you've never been before - go to Navy Pier, take a river cruise, get some deep dish pizza, go to a Cubs game (or at least go to the Cubby Bear or some of the other great bars in Wrigleyville).

I still remember the museum from a 2nd grade field trip too - they had awesome interactive exhibits that were so much fun.  I also love Shedd's Aquarium.

  • There are 2 restaurants that I LOVE and eat at whenever I'm in Chicago: Sunda and Frontera Grill. The first is Asian fusion and the second is Mexican. Have fun!

  • My absolute most favorite thing I did while in Chicago (and possibly on any of the trips I've taken) was see a Second City show.  Have fun!
  • Thanks for the suggestions! I am hoping we can hit up the aquarium or museum one of the days we are with K's brothers family... It would be a fun to spend time with heir girls who are 6 and 8.

Cedar Point - We will def want to avoid headache-inducing rides. Thanks for the heads up!

  • I am so sad I got to this post so late!  I love Chicago and miss it like nobody's business.  Here's my take:

-AMAZING museums: SBS is right on with the Museum of Science and Industry, but the Art Institute is unparalleled in its quality and awesomeness.  The MOCA is decent, they get great pieces but whomever curates it leaves something to be desired.  The Field Museum, The Adler Planetarium and the Shedd Aquarium are also awesome, and rather near each other, but I know you said time is limited so you can't see them all.

-FANTASTIC live theatre and music.  Second City is great, Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind is in Ravenswood (so, not downtown) but a Chicago institution.  For Blues, you should check out Kingston Mines.  The Aragon is a famous live music venue, and right on the El (P.S. The El is a fantastic way to get around the city.  I love it and miss it).

-shopping: people love the Magnificent Mile.  Truthfully, it's just fancy stores that are everywhere.  When I was in high school we used to ride the El down to Clark and Belmont, which has some cooler hipster shops etc.  It's also near Wrigleyville so you could go hang out there (it might be too late to actually get a Cubs ticket.  Or, rather, I'm sure they're sold out and you'd have to pay a scalper through the nose).

-food: must try Chicago pizza.  Everyone loves Lou Malnati's.  My favorite is Viccino's which is a chain but might not be downtown.  Most of the places I love to go to eat are in Evanston, because that's where I grew up, but I know there are awesome places downtown.  Bistro Zinc comes to mind--not even sure if they still exist.

As for Cedar Point: we went as part of our honeymoon extravaganza last year--loved it!  They have some of the best wooden rollercoasters in the country and we just stuck to those and were fine--no headache.  I remember really liking Gemini and I believe the Mean Streak (the really huge one).  I wish I could remember the hotel where we stayed--it was a simple little place but AAA rated (and not many in Sandusky were), right down the street from the entrance.  The guy was super nice and upgraded us to a "deluxe" room (hot tub in room!) because it was our honeymoon.

    Have fun!
