Not happy with veterinarian (long)

Had to take my cat to the vet on Saturday. She had another panting spell on Friday & this time she didn't recover as she has in the past. When she tries to move, she's all jerky. Our regular vet couldn't fit us in, but recommended another vet. They were friendly enough, but we were not provided with an estimate as requested. After bloodwork, x-rays & injections, the bill was $315. What's worse it that my cat is no better. They called yesterday & I told them that. Did not hear anything back until this morning & it wasn't the vet that called, but the assistant/receptionist/whoever to make an appt. for follow up. I told her I couldn't spend any more, then realized that the bloodwork I paid for had never been discussed with me. Called back about that & was told that my cat's white count was low. The cat had been diagnosed with & treated for asthma. Asthma doesn't make your white count drop. I also realized they didn't take her temperature, which would have confirmed or ruled out an infection. I feel that she was not examined thoroughly & I did not get my money's worth out of the visit AND my cat is still sick.

  • can you talk to them about what happened? or maybe your regular vet? they should at least do a follow up to explain test results. That is very unprofessional of them.

completely agreed. And, I'm so sorry that this happened to you, it seems like this vet either really let the ball drop, or there was a lack of communication between them at the office. At least that's what I'd like to think, I'd hate to say it happened intentionally! Most importantly, I hope she gets better :)

  • How frustrating!  I know my cat has had some unexplained illnesses in the past that have required a couple of visits. We never really got a good answer on what was making her sick, but we treated her symptoms and she recovered fully.

I agree that they shouldn't charge the normal "visit price" for a follow-up.  $315 does sound pretty typical for the tests and injections.

I do think there was a lack of communication and it seems like the vet isn't acting as concerned with your cat's health as I would expect.  It is also very weird that they didn't take her temp.  That is pretty unacceptable, IMO.  I would be pissed about that, too.

  • Booo to that vet! I hope you can get something worked out. Many thoughts for you and your kitty.

  • I've had problems with poor service and communication with a vet before.  My problem is that they kept blowing off my concerns and didn't even bother to do the tests that you mentioned.  I finally found a new vet who was willing to listen to me, and he ran some tests, figured out what was wrong with my kitty, and made her better.  I know you're in somewhat of a different situation, but I know how frustrating it can be to get poor service from your vet.

I think others here have offered good advice and I can't think of anything else to add.  Good luck!  I hope you're able to get some answers soon.

  • Ugh I'm sorry :(  The cost sounds typical for all the work you had done, but sounds like they have been pretty terrible at communicating with you.  DH and I had a similar situation a while ago when our cat was sick and our vet wanted to do $400 worth of tests on him.  I ended up searching for a more affordable location and went Weisner, Innis and Schoen on Plainfield.  At this place the vet agreed to do one step at a time and informed me of the cost with every decision.  She was able to make a diagnosis after only taking one x-ray (as opposed to the x-rays, bloodwork, and urinalysis the other vet wanted to do).

The place wasn't fancy, but the vet and staff were so kind and it was much MUCH more affordable.

  • I agree that the bill was not outrageous for what was done, just feel like the vet was not thorough enough to get my money's worth out of the exam, bloodtest & xray.
  • 2cars, how's the kitty doing?
