Do you like your career: I do!

Best/Worst Part about it: Best - I'm motivated and challenged/Worst - don't know yet. I've only been in this role for 2 weeks.

  • I love hearing what all of you actually do while nesting away during the day!

    Industry:  Medicine

    Title:  Student

Brief Description:  I study all the time and rack up ridiculous amounts of student loans in the process.  Three more years and I'll be a doctor of some sort.

Do you like your career:  Most days, but not if you ask me before exam week or when I get loan statements.

Best/Worst Part about it:   Best:  it's always what I've wanted.  I love medicine and I know I won't be bored with my career once it gets started.

Worst:  I miss going out with friends all the time during school because I'm stuck in my office with my laptop.  We don't get to have a life most of the time.

  • Industry:  Politics

    Title:  Operations Coordinator

Brief Description:  I work at a political non-profit and do minor IT stuff, some accounting, HR, and office management.

Do you like your career:  Yup!

Best/Worst Part about it:  I love that I am working for something that I believe in and that I believe makes this country better.  The worst part is that I don't know what the next step for me to take in a few years is.  I still don't really know what I want to be when I grow up.

    Industry:   Beverage production

    Title: Human Resources

Brief Description: I do all the hiring, drug tests, orientations, pay the state employee tax witholdings, reconcile other insurance statements, employee counseling, write ups, terminations, unemployment claims

Do you like your career: Yes I love it!

Best/Worst Part about it: Best part is when I hire someone that exceeds our expectations and gets 2 promotions within a year! Worst part is dealing with all the high school BS that still goes on on the production floor and having to terminate someone. Thankfully I have never had to do a lay off because I think that would be far worse than terminating someone for something they knew was wrong.

  • Industry: Education

    Title: Latin teacher

Brief Description: This year I'm teaching 6th-9th grades introductory Latin.  I'll have taught every grade from 1st-12th by the end of this year.

Do you like your career: Mostly

Best/Worst Part about it: I love to teach and my passion is Latin, but I was in a horrible job situation last year and it dimmed my enthusiasm a bit.  I'm considering going back to school in a year or two so I can eventually teach college rather than primary or secondary.
  • Industry: education

Title: primary reading and math specialist

Brief Description: This particular position is new, so I'm not *exactly* sure, yet!  I think I will go into kinder, 1st, and 2nd grade classrooms and do small intervention groups with kids who need extra support.

Do you like your career: Yes.....but after a really bad year last year, I need a school-year that brings me back to it a bit.

Best/Worst Part about it: I work with low-income, ELL students so making a difference in their lives is so rewarding.  These kids generally are so appreciative and eager to learn.  I love the relationships I have with my students.  The worst part is definitely the politics-district, state, and national.  Let me do my job and leave me alone!

  • Industry: Staffing/Employment

    Title: Recruiter

Brief Description: I try to get people jobs.  Mostly in the administrative, legal and HR fields.

Do you like your career: Sometimes I do and sometimes I don't.  These last two years have been awful but I'm hoping we continue to pick up business.

Best/Worst Part about it: The best part is when I find someone their dream job and they are so happy they cry.  The worst is either when I have to fire someone or I have to tell someone that I can't help them because they don't have the skills my clients are looking for.

  •  This is NOT my ideal career, this is a job until I get my career ;)

    Industry: Navy Medicine

    Title: Management Assistant

Brief Description: I basically do all of the grunt work, order supplies, edit documents, create presentations, etc, etc.

Do you like your career: I like some of the people here, but politics just get involved and the work is boring.

Best/Worst Part about it: The best part is some of the people I work with. The worst is politics and whiny coworkers.

My career that I should be in and am licensed and qualified for. ;)

    Industry: Education

    Title: Prek-sixth grade Elementary Educator

Brief Description: I'm qualified to teach Prekindergarten through sixth grade. :) Elementary Educators either teach all subjects to their class or team teach. Team teaching is where one teacher will teach one subject and another teacher will teach the others. The classes switch half way through the day.

Do you like your career: I love teaching :)

Best/Worst Part about it: The best part about teaching is when you see a child's face light up and they just understand what you've been trying to teach them. The worst part would be behavior issues that arise and have to be addressed.

    Best/Worst Part about it:

I love seeing the kids learn. The moment they understand something you have possibly been working on for a year or even two years and then they finally get it. • Industry:  Healthcare

Title:  Clinical Lead (Nurse) of a Cardiac Progressive Care Unit

Brief Description:  I am responsible for 12 RNs, making sure they are up to date with licensure, education, performing properly.  Deal with issues that arise from them as well as the RNs working under me for the day if I am in charge of the unit.  I was the educator of the unit before and I miss it...but this is a step up the ladder for my company.  The hospital I work for just finished building a new hospital last year - so the unit I came to work on is brand new - no one has ever worked together and then the RNs were told they were going to be taking care of sicker patients...I did all of their education, classroom training, posters, tests, etc.  This position opened up and since it was considered a step-up, I took it knowing I probably would not like it because of the opportunities.

Do you like your career:  I love nursing.  Adore it, I love helping patients and families.  I also love educating the nurses, when I get to work I have multiple RNs coming up to me and asking questions, looking for that training - that makes my day.  I feel awful the RNs do not have others they can turn to for the support.

Best/Worst Part about it:  I had a lot less stress and work when I was doing education - and I make the same as what I do now...Because our unit is going through a transition the RNs are afraid to say they are scared and having 3 bad/challenging ones who call the Union every time I turn around - it is stressful.  The other bad part is I cannot be there every minute of every day and the nurses make mistakes - the MDs who I have worked with (on a different unit in the hospital) come to me and are really frustrated.  But the best part is seeing the nurses finally getting a concept I have explained to them for the past 8 months and seeing it in real time - love it!  I am sticking with the position for at least a year to be fair to the RNs who need support right now - then back to get my NP.

  • Industry:  Healthcare

Title:  Nurse Clinician I (aka brand new nurse)

Brief Description: Im a Neonatal ICU nurse.  I care for patients born between 23 weeks gestation through post term (depending on their diagnosis & progression, some of our patients have been w us up to 6 months of age) I'm responsible for all assessments, medications, labwork, ivs etc as well as relaying information to the residents & attendings.  Educating families is a huge part too.

Do you like your career:  I love it.  It's strange because I never planned to be a nurse until I started working as a CNA.  (after all the awful medical events that have happened in my family, you'd think it was the last thing Id want to do.)  I went to nursing school because of the unit I work in and feel very fortunate to have a spot on their team.

Best/Worst Part about it: I love the complexity of ICUs and seeing parents get to take their babies home finally.  The worst part is that there is so much to learn & Im still so new that sometimes I feel like I'll never learn it all to the point that I'll be comfortable to be away from my preceptor.  I know what Im doing, I just really like having that safety net sometimes lol.  The bad days are the worst too-when patients code or die & seeing how it affects the family.
