Infections after sex....

My husband and I have been struggling with the fact that after every time we are intimate I end up with some type of infection. Does anyone else struggle with this?

Re: Infections after sex....

  • What kind of infection? UTI? To avoid UTIs (Urinary Tract Infections), it's advised to urinate everytime after intercourse...

But your question is pretty general ...kind of hard to offer advice without more specifics... If you are taking all the proper precautionary steps, yet are still coming down with chronic infections, then that's something you definately want to see your doctor about until it's resolved...

  • Most of the time it is a yeast infection that then becomes a UTI. I go to my obgyn about 3 times a month and have gotten no relief. He just keeps telling me to have sex. But its hard to get into knowing whats to follow and it makes me husband feel bad it causes me pain. We are both taking all precautions.

Your GYN just keeps telling you to have sex? Does he say anything else..? I'm just a little confused... You're getting medication and/or antibiotics right?...

  • Yes i just keep getting prescriptions, but he is telling me the worst thing i could do it stop having sex. I just dont think this is normal.
  • If you are using condoms that may be the problem. I used to have infections everytime after sex. My doctor gave me some tips and that solved it. No condoms (you may be allergic), pee before and after sex, make sure your partner is clean Wink and no anal, you know... hygiene. Try those tips, see if it gets better. GL

  • You can also reduce the risk of yeast infection by wearing cotton underwear or going w/o to let everything breath.  Using non-scented soap helps too.  My step-sister had a terrible time w/ yeast infections and that was some of the advice from the GYN.  HTH.
  • Has he ever been checked for a yeast infection? It's not very common but it can happen. I had an ex that kept passing me yeast infection.  I told him to go to the DR and get treated, and we didn't have the issue anymore.

I was just going to say this

  • That kind of happened to me, but not quite as  severe.  I found that having him use a condom, and peeing immediately after sex, helped a lot.  After I went off birth control, it helped a lot, too.  Now it hasn't happened in months (I am pregnant, but we still sometimes use condoms for the infection reason).
  • Do you use condoms with built-in lubrication?  Perhaps you are allergic to the lube (or possibly the nonoxonyl 9).  Try an unlubricated condom.

Or if you use a separate lube, perhaps you need to try a different brand.

You should also talk to a urologist.  I would get UTI's frequently, take anti-biotics and get another one a while later.  This went on for about a decade.  I ended up going to an OB-GYN who was also a urologist and she ran a very sensitive test on my urine and found that I had a low level bladder infection.  She gave me medicine to take for 90 days to truly get it out of my system.  I haven't had a UTI since.

  • You could be allergic to his sperm, this happened to me and I built up an immunity over time. Also environmental factors also affected me as well. Such as baths versus showers, take showers because bacteria can enter through the water from sitting in a tub and get pushed further into you when you have sex.

And drink a lot of cranberry juice (the coctail not the watered down version) this increases the acidity of your urine and has been proven to clean bacteria out of your UT, so definitely pee after sex. Hope this helps!

  • What kind of soap are you using? I had the same problem where it felt like I had a yeast infection all the time. I started to use Summers Eve liquid soap and I havent had a problem since.

Thank God I am not the only one!!

Well when my husband and I first started having intercourse, it was really bad, just as severe as yours.  They weren't going away until I started taking cranberry pills everyday.  I know that seems like it won't do much but I really do think that it helps and because it's really severe, I would take up to 4 a day.  It's medically proven to help with healthy urination and what not.  Also, if the problem persists, you should be put on anti-biotics for everytime you have sex or even see a urologist(sp?).  The only bad part is, you'll be on anti-biotics for the rest of your life.

Good luck and I hope that what helped me helps you get less!
