Mackinac Island recs

The Traverse City post below inspired me...

We're thinking of going up to Mackinac Island next month for the weekend to celebrate our anniversary. We've never been up north before, but figure we should before we move out of Michigan. Do you guys have any recommendations for places to stay or things to do? We were thinking of maybe just staying on the main land and take day trips to the island to cut down on cost, but we're not really sure. Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated! TIA!

Re: Mackinac Island recs

  • Too bad your anniverary isn't in September when the prices really drop!  I personally think staying on the island is well worth it!  I did a lot of research when we went a few years ago and found that the Murray Hotel was about the most inexpensive you could get. The rooms are tiny, but they have a/c (most places don't on the island) and a continental breakfast.  It's also located right downtown.  You have to go to the Haunted Wax Museum right downtown, especially if you like to be scared.  I highly recommend the carriage tour around the island.  My favorite thing to do is just to bike around.  We also took our clubs and golfed the Grand Hotel course which was fabulous!  I always like to go horseback riding, but its SO expensive.  At night I recommend going down to the lodge at Mission Point.  They have great food and live music, although I think alot of the bars have live music now.  Have a great time!

  • My in-laws stay every year at the Island House. They say it is worth every penny and more for the room. It is so relaxing up there to just sit on the porch and watch the boats go by. The butterfly house is kinda cheesy, but fun at the same time just to see all the different types of butterflies.

    Have a great trip!

Haven't stayed there, but I was doing some research for a trip & that's the place I thought was the best value. Some packages include your breakfast & dinner in the price.

  • We stayed at the Mission Point when I was there a long time ago and it was really nice. My friend goes every year and just stays at B&Bs.

The thing to do there seems to be take a tandem bike ride around the island. So beautiful.

If you like sappy love stories, you might want to check out the movie "Somewhere in Time." It was filmed at the Grand Hotel there.
