Sick Bunny...sorry a little long

So I never post on here, but I "lurk" a lot...anyways I am a June 4th bride.  Anyways, before we got together I had 3 pets of my own 2 dogs, a maltese named Lilly, and a shelite named Zoey, as well as my rabbit Roxy.

Well a little over a week ago Roxy's eating habits changed and she wasn't really eating much.  She ended up losing weight so I took her to the vet today...after an hour plus at the vet and some x-rays he said that she has cancer.  I broke down...it was even worse because my husband couldn't be there with me so my mom drove.  But worse than that Roxy is my husbands favorite animal in the house...he LOVES her so much...she is like his little princess...when he wakes up in the morning and comes in the living room she goes to the end of her towel and stretches as far out past the towel as she can and follows him (she has a cage with a towel in front of it since our floors are hardwood and she can't get around on it too well she gets on the towel).

Well when I got home and saw him I burst into tears and he held me...then when I pulled back to breathe he was crying.  He didn't have seconds at dinner like usual and when he looks at her and thinks about it he tears up.  I am a total baby and keep crying...it breaks my heart because we both want to keep her with us forever but at the same time she is sick and we don't want her to suffer.  It is just totally devastating.  I love animals but because of the pain of losing one I don't think I should get any more, my husband laughed then cried with me when I told him that.  I am so thankful to have him but it hurts to see him going through this and to see him cry (I have never seen him cry like this).

Anyways...I am so sorry this is so long but I felt most comfortable putting the story on here vs. facebook since all of my friends on there are some of his friends...don't want them knowing he cried.

Re: Sick Bunny...sorry a little long

  •  I definitely understand what you're going through. pet loss IS family loss. my dad has been an emotional wreck about my dog (we had to have her put down twoish weeks ago), and quite frankly i cannot handle even thinking about him or i cry like a baby.  it's the only time i've ever seen my father cry, not just tear up, but cry.

and if it makes you feel any better my DH baked and ate cookies in secret he was so upset (i just found the hidden dough in the fridge yesterday. he kept trying to come up with different stories about them. but helllooooo they were stashed in the veggie drawer! AND he left NO signs of ever making cookies. hahahaha what an idiot....).

For whatever reason pets are just one of those things that dudes can cry about and/or get really emotional about pretty openly. i dont think i've seen dudes cry as much about family members or parents as they do pets. there's just something about animals.

    ETA: hugs and tissues!

  • Hello & welcome! I'm very sorry to hear about your bunny. I know it's one of the hardest things in the world to deal with and my heart goes out to you.
  • Thank you.  That is funny about your hubby.  It is soo hard...he is not a huge fan of my dogs so who knows how he will be if anything ever happens with them...but this is his buddy...she is snuggled on the couch watching a movie with him right now.

I think it is the unconditional love animals give...they don't talk back, they don't judge, and even when you have gotten upset with them they don't care they still love you 110% no questions asked.

I just hope we can help her and keep her comfortable with minimal pain and not have to actually put her down.  My mom has been nice enough to say that if it came to that she would take her for us...I think after seeing him it would be too hard on him to even take her.  I know I am not strong enough to do it even when it comes to the point where you know it's what is best.

  • One of my very favorite things about my H is how much he loves our pets.

I am so so sorry to hear about your bunny. Give her lots of love.

  • This made me cry just reading this. I'm sorry to hear about your bunny. We have a 14 year old dog, and we're thinking he'll only make another year. It's going to be so hard on my H, because he has had this dog since he was a puppy. I never want that day to come.

Sorry again about your bunny, give her lots of love.

  • Hi and welcome.  I'm sorry to hear about your bunny.  I know how you feel when it comes to pets being your babies.  My sister and her partner had to put their  Beagle down last month and I cried for days.  We have two dogs, a 15 year old Cocker and 3 year old Beagle and I can't even think about losing them.

Hugs to you and your DH.  And healthy vibes to Roxy.  She's very lucky to have such loving and caring pet parents.

  • hi welcome

    Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

  • Thank you so much to everyone here!  All of your stories, and kind words have truly helped and made today feel a bit better than yesterday.  It is hard to be home alone with her because I feel weak and every time I look at her it makes me sad and I cry, so my mom took me for some retail therapy today.  It is nice to spend time with her and my DH together as a family...I can handle it better with him around.  Also, HUGE thank you to everyone for making me feel welcome here, it really means a lot!

Quick update on Roxy...the vet said we could feed her baby food since she wasn't eating her pellets very well so my mom got her some carrots and mixed vegies and she LOVED the carrots (going to try the mixed vegies tomorrow).  We have also been giving her celery since he said that was alright as well and since it has a lot of water in it to keep her hydrated.  So far she has ate the whole jar of carrots and a small amount of pellets today along with some celery.  My mom and I think she feels a bit "fatter" than she did but my DH thinks I am crazy...probably so.  She is also taking her medication like a champ!  Right now she is laying all snuggled up on my favorite pink blankie on the couch and looks so cute!
