Health insurance with maternity coverage?

I am shopping for an individual health insurance plan. I am currently covered through my husband's Army benefits, but he is about to get out of the Army. He will continue to have coverage as a disabled veteran, but I am having trouble finding an individual plan for myself with maternity coverage.  We are moving to San Marcos next week and I will not be getting benefits through my new job.

Do you know of any health insurance companies that offer maternity coverage? Any alternative options? I am open to any suggestions and value all the help I can get! TIA!

Re: Health insurance with maternity coverage?

  • When I was shopping around for health insurance last year, Scott and White had the best prices. I don't remember all the details of the plans, you can choose different options/amount of coverage and that will change the premium, but still wasn't as expensive as some other plans out there.
  • Most independent insurance covers pregnancy only as a rider. It's usually an extra $140 or so a month and the coverage doesn't kick in for 12-18 months, depending on the policy. It is really hard to get coverage. I lucked out being in the legal field because I got individual coverage through the state bar and it covers pregnancy.  You can check einsurance.com for regular plans with riders, or try pp's suggestion of Scott and White. Good luck!

  • I'd look into something like Aflack. A friend told me she got that during her pregnancy and maternity but I'm honestly not sure of the details.

  • SA- I have looked in to S&W but all the options available on their website don't mention maternity. Do you know any more about it or what plan it might be? Or is it a separate rider?

Leigha- The 12-18 month is something I am concerned about! If at all possible I'd like to find something that will kick in before then because we were looking at starting TTC in about 6 months. We originally planned to extend our military insurance (which is allowed for 18 months after separation from the Army) but now that H has been classified as a disabled veteran, he is covered through the VA and there isn't an option available for spouses. Free insurance for him is just too good to pass up but now I'm in a bit of a panic trying to figure out something for me!

JayandJack- I will check out Aflac. Thanks!

Aflac is not health coverage.  It is like a short term diability policy that would pay a portion of your salary if you are out.  It's likely to have a long waiting period for maternity too

  • I am positive when I was looking at the plans last year, it covers maternity visits, delivery, ...., you just need to call them and ask, it's like having an insurance through your employer.

Thank you! I am looking in to it now. For some reason all the plans that were displaying on their website didn't mention maternity. Must be their little secret, ha. Smile Thanks again!
