Re: POLL!!! You and DH's First Place

  • When you and DH first moved in together:

Did you get a new place together?  Did one of you move in with the other?  We got a place together.  We had both been living with our parents...losers!!!  :)

Was it a house?  Apt?  Condo?   2 bed/2 bath apartment

Was it nice?  What did you love/hate about it?  It was a dump!  But it was cheap and we were broke.  I loved it that the building had a basement, so we had our own storage room down there.  But it was falling apart....the carpet in the hallway was always wet, no idea why.  The kitchen counters weren't glued down or anything, you could pick them up.  There was ONE drawer in the entire apt.  ONE!!!  No pantry.

How long did you live there?  Are you there still?  We lived there about 18 months.  We moved out when we left Michigan to come to Texas.

  • Hubby moved in with me (he was living with his bro). We lived in a 1 bedroom apartment in Round Rock for about 4 months before we moved back to college station (migrated to a 2 bdrm at that time). we were in that apartment for about 1.5 years before buying our house.
  • Did you get a new place together? Yes

Was it a house?  Apt?  Condo?  It was a duplex, I refused to live in another apartment due to noisy neighbors.

Was it nice?  What did you love/hate about it? It was. It was a great north central location for a great price. Master bedroom was huge. It had a tiny yard that the landlord took care of. I really liked it.

How long did you live there?  Are you there still? We lived there for a little over 2 years. We'd still be there if I hadn't taken a job in Temple.

We have so much time, and so little to do! Strike that, reverse it.

  • When you and DH first moved in together: We moved in together just before our 1-year dating anniversary

Did you get a new place together?  Did one of you move in with the other? I moved into his place

Was it a house?  Apt?  Condo?  It was an apartment

Was it nice?  What did you love/hate about it? It was way too small. He had a one-bedroom that barely had enough space for his stuff, so me moving in made it even more cramped.

How long did you live there?  Are you there still? We lived there from May-November, and then moved into a much bigger two-bedroom apartment. Now we have a house and much more room.

  • Did you get a new place together? Yes we had just graduated college and both needed a place

Was it a house?  Apt?  Condo?  Apartment

Was it nice?  What did you love/hate about it? It was not very nice but I didn't have a job yet and DH hadn't started when we had to find a place.  Love-that it was our first place Hate-The drag races in the parking lot, the constant smell of curry everywhere, the paper thin walls where I could hear EVERYTHING

How long did you live there?  Are you there still? A little over two years.  We moved to TX plus it would have been time for an upgrade.  We did save a lot of money living there though.

  • The first time we lived together, we both moved in to (separate rooms at) his parents' house because we were helping to take care of them while his mom was dying from lung cancer.  We lived there until about 7 months after she died, helping his dad cope and learn how to get by without her.  I was happy to be there for DH (FI at the time) and his family but it was really tough.

About a month before we got married we moved to a great apartment near my office.  It was really nice, 2-1 two-level w/ attached garage, balcony, laundry room, etc.  Except it was right on a busy road, that part sucked.  Also, once we got our dog a few months later, taking him out on walks 4-5 times a day got really old really fast.  Especially in the rain/ice.  We lived there for 8 months before moving into our current house.

How long did you live there?  Are you there still?  we lived there together about a year and half, then moved to TX.  the "master plan" is to move back eventually but, as previously mentioned in another post, master plans don't always work out. :/

  • When you and DH first moved in together:

Did you get a new place together?  Did one of you move in with the other?

I moved in with him and his brother. I have no idea why I was excited about it either.. I mean, the thrill over moving in with him totally blinded me to the reality of what I was signing up for....

Was it a house?  Apt?  Condo?

    It was his brother's house.

Was it nice?  What did you love/hate about it?

No, it was definitely very 'bachelor pad' - very country - very obvious that only men lived there. I spruced it up as best I could, kept it clean, bought new kitchenwares, etc. When I moved in, they had only one of every dish - one plate, one bowl, one spoon, etc. They said that was so there would never be a pile of dirty dishes in the sink. If you wanted to eat, you cleaned the one dish to do so. Ridiculous. I taught them there are in fact other ways to keep dishes from piling up... like washing them every night before bed (no dishwasher). I HATED that it was out in the middle of nowhere, that I lived with 2 crazy guys (3 at one point), that it was his brother's "love shack" so there was often a strange girl to meet in the mornings, that it was on a huge country lot which = field mice (uuuuuugh!). Hated the well water.. oh man, hated it. Ha.ted.It.

How long did you live there?  Are you there still?

HELL NO we are not still there. We moved as quickly as possible, 6 months maybe? We got a small apt after that and even though we lived in a shoe box, it was MUCH better than sharing that house with a bunch of dirty guys. We lived in the shoe box for about a year then bought our first house. Lived there for 2, then bought our current house.

  • When you and DH first moved in together:  After ~3.5 yrs of dating... about a year before we got married.

Did you get a new place together?  Did one of you move in with the other?  He moved in with me.

Was it a house?  Apt?  Condo?  A house (I owned)

Was it nice?  What did you love/hate about it?  Yes - we still live there...  I love the location (central) and the neighborhood, but it was a 2/1 950 sq ft. . . perfect for me and my budget, but a little small for both of us together.  When I originally bought (before DH moved in), I bought it with the intent of buying smaller and adding on when I could afford it.  5yrs later and we just finished the remodel/addition - 1500sq ft now and its way nicer.  BTW - the kitchen was originally 6' x 10'.  It was sooo narrow - it only had 20" cabinets, only on 1 side of the kitchen.  No counter space, no cabinet space, and the fridge made the entry into the kitchen ~2' wide.  We moved/made a bigger kitchen as part of the remodel.

How long did you live there?  Are you there still?  5+ yrs now.  We're still there, bigger house though.

  • When you and DH first moved in together:  XH and I moved in together about 6 months before our wedding.

Did you get a new place together?  Did one of you move in with the other?  He'd bought a house a few months before we got engaged, I moved in with him from an apartment.

Was it a house?  Apt?  Condo?  House.

Was it nice?  What did you love/hate about it?  Hated: location, neighborhood, crappy repairs previous owner had done.  Liked: I picked out all the paint colors, new flooring, and enjoyed doing a lot of renovating myself.

How long did you live there?  Are you there still?  We lived there for about 4 years, but put it on the market when we seperated and it sold shortly after our divorce was final.  I bought a house of my own around the same time and LOVE it.

  • When you and DH first moved in together:

Did you get a new place together?  Did one of you move in with the other?  He already had an apt. here in Austin... I moved in with him.

Was it a house?  Apt?  Condo?  Apt.

Was it nice?  What did you love/hate about it?  Yea it was really nice.... small but nice.  It was very convenient bc it was literally right next door to his work.

How long did you live there?  Are you there still?  We lived there for 2 years.  Then rented a duplex for a year and then bought our first home together!  We've been here for a little over a year.

Did you get a new place together?  Did one of you move in with the other?  I moved in with him

Was it a house?  Apt?  Condo?  House

Was it nice?  What did you love/hate about it?  It was nice, but I wasn't a big fan since he had built it with his ex-wife.  Petty, I know, but still...

How long did you live there?  Are you there still?  Lived there about a year and a half, then we built our own house and moved just before we got marriedAll of the memories in the new place are ours and ours alone.  :)

  • When you and DH first moved in together: October 2006

Did you get a new place together?  Did one of you move in with the other? We moved into an apartment together here in Austin, after moving from Washington DC.  Lots of changes!

Was it a house?  Apt?  Condo?  Apartment

Was it nice?  What did you love/hate about it?  We loved it - it was our first place.  It was super small but in a really nice community.

How long did you live there?  Are you there still?  We lived in that apartment for one year, our second apartment for 9 months (upgraded to 2 bedrooms) and now we live in our first brand new house.

  • Did you get a new place together? We technically got a new place.

Did one of you move in with the other? I kinda moved in with him. My apartment in San Marcos, was umm ... no longer available to me (cough, I had to sublease it out because my Dad quit paying the rent because I quit going to school. Not good days Wink) And his roomate had quit paying rent and moved out, so together we moved into a 1 bedroom apartment in his apartment complex.

Was it a house?  Apt?  Condo?  Apartment. I remember those days very fondly. We had a futon. And bought grocerys on an Exxon card, and DH's car was a joke. We were poor, poor, poor, but man we were happpy!

Was it nice?  What did you love/hate about it? It was nice because it was new. It was cheap because it was waaay up North off Parmer Lane Wink I hated ... the apartment complex manager. She was in love with my now DH. And the guy downstairs was a slob, and we kept getting ant infestations coming up from his place.

How long did you live there?  Are you there still? We lived there, hmmm let me think. Marchish 2003 to ... Early 2005, so a couple years. No, we are not still there. We moved to another apartment down south for about a year and a half and then we bought the house we live in now.

  • When you and DH first moved in together:

After the wedding but we stayed at each others place every night for a year before.

Did you get a new place together?  Did one of you move in with the other?

We moved into his house, it was bigger then my condo.

Was it a house?  Apt?  Condo?

A cute 3 bedroom house that I have totally redone.

Was it nice?  What did you love/hate about it?

It was a bachelor pad when we first started dating but over the years I have helped him see the light, well lighter colors and more family friendly furniture.

How long did you live there?  Are you there still?

We have been married and are still there, however we are looking for a new house later this year or early next year. We want to stay in the same area just a bigger home.

dh moved in with me.  i already owned a 4 bedroom, 2.5 bath home, and we still live in it today.  we'd like to move because although this house is fine for us, we'd like something that has a different layout.  the rooms in our house are not that big, so we'd like maybe 3 bedrooms, but larger rooms, if that makes sense.  and a bigger kitchen, or at least more counterspace.  ah, some day.  oh, and i've lived here 11 years, dh 6 years.

  • Did you get a new place together? Did one of you move in with the other?  We moved in together about a month after we got married.  Our leases both expired at the end of December and we got married at the beginning of December.  We were too practical to lose that time, so we just waited 'til after we were married to start the whole moving process.  We moved into an apartment that was new to both of us.

Was it a house? Apt? Condo?  It was a 2/2 apartment in South Austin.

Was it nice? What did you love/hate about it?  It was nice!  It was on the very edge of the complex, on the third floor.  It backed right up to the Greenbelt and had lots of windows.  We never had to close our blinds, and it was like living in a treehouse.  Of course, living on the third floor also meant that moving in/out and carrying the groceries up the stairs sucked big time.

How long did you live there? Are you there still?  We lived there for about nine months.  We actually had to move before our lease was up because the Navy moved us back to DC.  Happily, apartments let you out of your lease with no problem if you have orders to show them.  :)

  • Did you get a new place together?  Did one of you move in with the other?  he moved in with me because he had just started a new job in austin.  we had unoffically 'lived' together for a long time through college - but we both had our own places just in case.  When he moved into my apartment (that i lived in alone) was the first time we were really living together.

Was it a house?  Apt?  Condo? 1 bedroom, 1 bath apartment that was about 600 sf. feet.  It was a tight squeeze for us and the dog!

Was it nice?  What did you love/hate about it?  It was nice enough for an apartment.  I hated how small it felt once he moved in.  Adding another person is a space suck.

How long did you live there?  Are you there still?  we lived together in that aparment for about 7 months then he moved to houston to finish graduate school.  I stayed there by myself and then he moved back in after graduate school (after we were already married).  Thankfully we were together in the tiny apartment for only about a month or two before we moved into a bigger place.

  • Did you get a new place together?  Did one of you move in with the other? I moved out of my apartment with roommates into my own apartment.  Within 2 weeks half of his stuff was in my closet. :-)

Was it a house?  Apt?  Condo?  Apartment

Was it nice?  What did you love/hate about it? personally I loved it. The only thing I didn't like was that it was way too small for 2 people (612 sq.ft)

How long did you live there?  Are you there still? We lived there for a year before moving.  We had no problems until we got ready to move out because management had changed.

  • We both moved into a "new" apartment together.

It was nice as far as apartments go, built within the prior 3 years. We lived there 1 year (that was 5 years ago!) I loved that we were there together. I look lovingly back on how little crap we had. ***sigh*** and now we're drowning in "stuff"

We've been married almost 5 years, 1 year at the apt, 3 in our "townhome" and 2 in our family house.

  • Did you get a new place together?  Did one of you move in with the other?

DH had a house that he had built on 10 acres.  It was stunning property over a valley w/ a creek.  It was a good house, but it had been built for the life he had and wasn't a good layout for our needs.  The architect had talked DH into a split-level which did maximize valley views, but he was never happy with the layout and flow.

How long did you live there?  Are you there still?

I lived w/ him there for three years, then we sold and bought another house in a suburban neighborhood in the same area.  We recently sold that and bought a new house in town.  We will live here for at least the next three years until DSS graduates HS and then decide what to do from there.  We know for sure we want to move back to land eventually.

  • Did you get a new place together?  Did one of you move in with the other?  We got a new apartment together. Originally we were looking just for him and it occurred to him "hey, why don't we live together?"  I gladly accepted.

Was it a house?  Apt?  Condo?  Apartment

Was it nice?  What did you love/hate about it? It was pretty nice.  Not bad for an apartment complex.  Little higher end.  LOVED the pool.

How long did you live there?  Are you there still? Lived there one year until I started school in San Marcos so we moved down to an apartment down south for 2 years then bought the house we live in now that we've had for 4 years.

  • When you and DH first moved in together: A week before we got married

Did one of you move in with the other? I moved in with him... from next door. He owned the fourplex, I lived with a roommate in one unit and he had been next door with his bro. When we got married, his bro moved in with a friend and I just scooted next door.

    Was it a house?  Fourplex

Was it nice? We remodeled the entire building together the year before we got engaged, and made it as nice as you can make 1000 sq feet.

What did you love/hate about it? I love the location, but hate how small it is. We just bought a duplex and will be moving into one side next week, it will have a couple hundred more square feet for us to work with, and it won't be a two story! YAY! Oh, and of course not having to pay rent is always nice.

How long did you live there? Sept. 2009- present

Are you there still? We start moving out on Monday!
